The NCIS franchise recently went back in time for its very first prequel, NCIS: Origins. This time, it is staying in the present, with the continuation of Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David’s story. NCIS: Tony & Ziva‘s story follows them in Europe, as they run away from an unknown foe. The offshoot doesn’t have any link to the mothership thus far, although it features references and Easter eggs.
While Tony and Ziva are on the run, McGee is stuck in Navy Yard after a busy but, ultimately, fruitless NCIS season 22. His hunch about Gabriel LaRoche turned out to be wrong, which may have officially killed his chances of getting his awaited promotion. Sadly, he has one more tragedy, and he doesn’t even know it yet.
Tony Calls Henry His Best Friend, Effectively Replacing McGee
During Tony and Ziva’s escape from the trap laid out by Martine and Markham in NCIS: Tony & Ziva episode 5, they also make amends with Henry. Tony’s history with Henry was established in the show’s flashback scenes, and aside from the recent kerfuffle, it seems like they have a great rapport.
What makes this more disappointing for McGee is that he and Tony not only know each other longer, they have also gone through so much more. Granted that the long-distance makes it difficult to regularly keep up with each other, Tony declaring that Henry is his best friend is still saddening for anyone who have seen him and McGee’s bond in NCIS.
How Tony’s Relationship With Henry Reframes MCRT’s Dynamic During Its Best Years
While Tony has some sort of working relationship with Henry, they are not regular co-workers, the same way that he and McGee were back in Washington DC. The fact that he has developed this personal dynamic with his supposed best friend despite not working side-by-side every day reframes how Gibbs’ best team’s dynamic is perceived.
Tony’s comment suggests that, while they went through multiple near-deaths and spent so much time together, Gibbs’ best team’s dynamic didn’t really become personal in NCIS. They were, essentially, just co-workers.
