Production and Filming Locations

When it comes to the production and filming of the movie “Titanic,” there was no lack of effort put in by director James Cameron. In 1997, Cameron filmed parts of “Titanic” all over the world, from the coasts of Mexico, to the depths of the North Atlantic.

But there were two primary filming locations for this iconic movie: Baja California, Mexico and Rosarito Beach, Mexico. In Baja California, Cameron and his team filmed exterior shots of ocean-liner sets that floated atop a 10 million-gallon tank called “The Riviera”. Then they moved to Rosarito Beach where they built an enormous floating set – a life-size replica of the Titanic that was 400 feet long and 150 feet high – right on the beach!

They also constructed a full-size replica of part of the Titanic’s interior in a studio lot in Playa del Rey, Los Angeles. There they filmed background scenes on intricately detailed sets recreating cabins and first class dining rooms – all painstakingly built down to a fraction inch according to plans from 1912.

So whether you’re watching the ship crash into an iceberg or Jack dancing with Rose in first class, you can be sure that what you’re seeing is as close to genuine as possible!
