It’s been 24 years since the iconic Titanic film came out, and such is evidence of its success and longevity that it was the highest-grossing movie of all time until 2010 when Avatar nicked the title and became the highest-grossing movie of all time.
The 1997 blockbuster film is seen as the launch pad for many of the stars, from Reading-born Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, and of course Billy Zane.
Titanic took home 11 Academy Awards, dominating the Oscars and becoming the most honoured film in its history. In the 24 years since it still holds the record for the most nominations, with 14, alongside All About Eve and La La Land.
But time doesn’t stand still and a lot has changed since then. The baby-faced actors we knew back then have grown up and moved on to star in in other equally amazing projects.
Kate Winslet
The Reading-born star’s role as Rose DeWitt Bukater rocketed her career to international fame, and landed her an Oscar nomination as a result of her memorable performance.
Although she didn’t win in 1998, she did eventually win the Academy Award for best actress in 2009, for The Reader.
Winslet turned 45 in October but the fact that she is still featuring in some of the biggest movies is a testament to her wonderful career that has spanned decades.
Her star status has seen her play roles in a multitude of films including Labor Day, Finding Neverland and Divergent.
The most recent film she was a part of was Ammonite – a romantic drama alongside fellow award-winning actress Saoirse Ronan.
Even in 2021, Kate Winslet is still going strong with her role in HBO’s Mare of Easttown as well as featuring in Avatar 2, which is scheduled to come out in cinemas in 2022.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo Di Caprio’s track record when it comes to making film hits speaks for itself.
Any awesome movie you can think of, Leo was probably in it.
Even though he’s played a lot of great characters over the years, he will always be seen as Jack Dawson from the Titanic.
His character’s an artist who falls in love with Rose while on board the iconic ship.
Since the Titanic, Leo hasn’t stopped creating magic on the big screen as he’s starred in several movies over the past two decades including Gangs of New York, The Departed and the Wolf of Wall Street.
After years of missing out on an Oscar, he was finally able to get his hands on the golden award in 2016 for his performance in The Revenant.
The well-known environmental activist is currently in the middle of filming his latest film, Don’t Look Up.
Billy Zane
Many people may not recognise him nowadays because of a change in hairstyle, swapping the black locks for a clean-shaven head, but Billy Zane was Rose’s fiancé, Cal Hockley.
Two years after finishing up on the Titanic, the actor, who turns 55 next month, went on to star as Roman politician Mark Antony in the 1999 mini-series, Cleopatra.
His career has gone from strength to strength and he’s continued to make waves in the film industry.
His talents have led to him making appearances in several TV shows over the years including Charmed, Deception and The Boys.
Frances Fisher
Do you remember what the British-born American actress’s role was in the film? She played the role of Rose’s mother, Ruth.
Her film journey didn’t stop at the Titanic; in fact, it continued to grow and she added to her film resume by starring in films like Laws of Attraction, The Roommate and True Crime.
Most recently she got herself a role in the 2019 mini-series Watchmen, as Jane Crawford.
Victor Garber
The 71-year-old actor was the builder of the Titanic ship, Thomas Andrews.
His success didn’t stop at the Titanic and he has gone on to have a very successful career in both film and TV.
He’s starred in a bunch of classic movies alongside some of Hollywood’s mega stars, such as Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, Emily Blunt in Sicario as well as featuring in other films like Argo and Milk.
He’s also transitioned from film to TV effortlessly, and has appeared in several recognisable television shows such as Modern Family and Glee to name a few.
Age is just a number for Garber as he found himself starring in 50 Cent’s extremely popular Netflix show Power as businessman Simon Stern.
