It was the film that somehow made a convincing love story out of a real-life tragedy, made us sick of Celine Dion by the next summer and had us all shouting ‘I’m the king of the world!’ at least once a week for a year.
We all know what happened to Titanic leads Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet (they did pretty well for themselves, didn’t they?), but what about some of their supporting cast? Here’s what happened to just some of the many, many actors from James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster.
1. BILLY ZANE (Caledon Nathan ‘Cal’ Hockley)
He had already played Biff’s crony in Back to the Future and starred as The Phantom way before superheroes were cool, but he’ll be forever known as the dastardly Cal. Since then, he’s starred in mostly straight-to-DVD movies, including The Scorpion King 3.
Billy’s also appeared in Charmed and Samantha Who? on TV, in Chicago on Broadway and cameo’d in Zoolander 2 earlier this year. He famously dated Kelly Brook for three years, and is now engaged to model Candice Neil, with whom he has two kids.
2. DANNY NUCCI (Fabrizio De Rossi)
Since playing Jack’s ill-fated Italian best bro, Danny has focused mainly on TV roles, and has appeared in everything from House to The Mentalist to Castle. He currently stars as Mike in the US sitcom The Fosters.
3. JASON BARRY (Tommy Ryan)
Jason played Jack and Fabrizio’s Irish mate, remember him? After Titanic, Jason has popped up in various movies and TV shows – most notably as Declan in Sons of Anarchy in 2014. He also appeared in the RTE drama series Love/Hate and the 2005 fantasy film MirrorMask.
4. CRAIG KELLY (Harold Bride)
Craig had a small role as a junior wireless operator on the Titanic, but he’s since become a star of British TV and soap. The same year as the movie he appeared as ‘Nervous Guy’ in Spice World, and three years later he landed one of the leads in the classic Queer as Folk.
He was in Coronation Street for most of 2009 as businessman Luke Strong, and finished ninth in Strictly Come Dancing in the same year. However, he has largely stayed away from TV and film since 2012. You may also recognise his voice in many BBC and Channel 4 idents, as well as Shipping Wars UK.
5. ALEXANDREA OWENS (Cora Cartmell)
Before Rose had to come and spoil it, it was Cora who danced with Jack in the third class party. Alexandrea now lives in LA and is still acting, and she will appear in a couple of independent movies this year.
Speaking of her time on the set, Alexandrea told Buzzfeed that Leo was “goofy” and “adorable” and even shared PB&J with her. Forever the gentleman.
6. IOAN GRUFFUDD (Fifth Officer Harold Lowe)
You’re forgiven if you totally forgot that Hornblower himself was on board the Titanic. Since rescuing Rose from the icy waters, Ioan has become quite the Hollywood star.
He led the cast of the aforementioned Hornblower TV series from 1998 to 2003, played Mr Fantastic in two Fantastic Four movies, appeared as Lancelot in King Arthur, and as Tony Blair in W., and has also had roles in Black Hawk Down, Glee, Ringer and San Andreas. He will next voice Colonel Hathi in The Jungle Book.
