Titanic: One Quote From Each Main Character That Sums Up Their Personality

Released 24 years ago, the global phenomenon Titanic remains one of the greatest movies of all time, at least according to Parade magazine. The James Cameron blockbuster won 11 Academy Awards and is still as popular now as it was then.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s unforgettable performances of star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose gave them worldwide recognition. As many of the characters are based on real people, their personalities were already carved in the eyes of the world. However, there are a few fictional characters included and they all have signature quotes that summarize who they are.

Thomas Andrews
“I’m Sorry That I Didn’t Build You A Stronger Ship, Young Rose.”

Thomas Andrews was a Titanic character based on a real person and was the designer of the famous ship. He was a sympathetic man and demonstrated that he valued other people’s safety. This was evident when he put forward the idea to have more lifeboats onboard, however, he was overruled.

Realizing Mr. Andrews is prepared to go down with the ship he built, Rose asks if he’s even going to try and survive. He ignores her question and simply apologizes to her for not building a stronger ship, feeling responsible for the tragedy. This quote was a testament to his character as he believed he didn’t deserve to live while other people died.

Margaret “Molly” Brown
“Come On Girls, Grab An Oar And Let’s Go.”

Molly Brown was brought to life by Kathy Bates in Titanic and this film is one of her best. Discrimination against the lower class was demonstrated several times, however not by Molly. Unlike many of the other first-class women, Molly was extremely likable and down to earth. This is perhaps because she was “new money” and therefore hadn’t grown up in a life of wealth.

After the ship sank, Molly was the only one in a lifeboat that wanted to go back and help people. Telling the other women to grab an oar, Molly was ready to risk her life to prevent innocent people from dying. Sadly, no one shared her views and she was forced to listen as passengers in the ocean screamed for help.

Brock Lovett
“It’s Payday, Boys.”

As a known treasure hunter, Brock Lovett often searched sunken ships to find items high in value. Spending a total of 3 years searching for the Titanic, he finds it at the beginning of the movie and hopes to locate the Heart of the Ocean safe onboard. When Brock’s team searches the wreckage, they find a safe belonging to Caledon Hockley.

Knowing that Cal was the one who purchased the diamond, Brock believes that they have found what they are looking for and ensures the men that it’s payday. Before he met Rose, Brock’s obsession with finding the diamond often clouded his views and it meant he disregarded the tragedy of the sinking.

Caledon Hockley
“You Know, It’s A Pity I Didn’t Keep That Drawing. It’ll Be Worth A Lot More By Morning.”

Born into a life of wealth, Cal Hockley’s arrogant personality was instantly recognized. Cal often flaunted his fortune and was happy to throw money at a problem to make it go away. While it has been suggested that Cal was actually the wronged party in the movie, his narcissistic personality proves why this is an unpopular opinion about Titanic.

Realizing that the ship will sink and half the people on board will die, Cal’s first thought is how much money he could’ve made if he kept Rose’s drawing. His cold-hearted persona is fully highlighted within this quote and proved that money was the only thing he valued in life.
