Tom Selleck Calls on Old Friends for Help: Contacts ‘Friends’ Cast for New Opportunities

Tom Selleck is going all out to land new work gigs now that Blue Bloods has been canceled, so he’s calling on all his pals to help, with the stars of Friends at the top of his list.

“He’s a hefty guy, but he wants to work,” an insider exclusively tells Closer of the 79-year-old actor. “He’s a workaholic. He can’t retire.”

Tom, who has starred as Commissioner Frank Reagan since the show premiered on CBS in September 2010, has previously expressed his frustrations that the police procedural drama will come to an end with its Season 14 finale in December.

But as the final episode draws near, the reality is really starting to sink in.

According to the Closer source, “Tom has finally got in his head — loud and clear — that he’s not coming back to the show despite all attempts to get producers to change their minds. So, he’s trying to get work proactively.”

Due to his prolific career in film and television, “He has lots of friends in Hollywood,” the source says, adding that he’s starting to tap into his contacts, including the ones he met while playing Dr. Richard Burke on the hit sitcom Friends.

“People might not realize how close he is with the Friends cast,” the source reveals. “They all loved him when he was on the show. He’s gotten in touch and continues to reach out to them for an olive branch.”

Because he played the love interest of Courteney Cox‘s character Monica Geller, Tom was particularly close with the Scream actress, 60, and Jennifer Aniston, who played Monica’s BFF Rachel Green.

“There is no one to better influence him than Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox,” says the source. “He truly believes they can set him up with a gig of his liking, and maybe Jen can even get him on The Morning Show. He would love that!”

Earlier this month, Tom addressed the end of Blue Bloods, telling TV Insider, “I’m kind of frustrated.”

“During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful,” he shared. “In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6! I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’”

The final season of the show was split into two parts, with the first half of the season airing in February and the second half of the season premiering in October. Tom has been very vocal about wishing the show would get picked up for another season instead of ending after experiencing so much success.

“I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe,” he told the outlet. “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.”

“So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out,” the Emmy winner confessed. “I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”
