Tom Selleck Makes Rare Appearance at Event Held in His Honor

  • The Detroit Tigers host Magnum, P.I., Day each year at Comerica Park.
  • Fans dress up like Tom Selleck’s famous character for the event.
  • This year, the actor joined fans for the special day.

It’s Magnum, P.I., Day at Comerica Park! On the last Sunday home game in August, the Detroit Tigers pay homage to the 1980s TV show and its star, Tom Selleck. Fans take the opportunity to dress up in Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, fake mustaches, and baseball hats. This year, the 80-year-old actor was in attendance to take in the festivities himself.

Tom was born in Detroit and as a life-long baseball fan has a soft spot for the Tigers. His Magnum character was often seen on-screen wearing a Detroit baseball hat as part of his iconic costume, and the character’s father was a fan of the team.

The fan event was first held in 2008 and supports the Brain Injury Association of Michigan. This year, Tom rolled up on a golf cart wearing a custom Tigers jersey with his name on the back and greeted fans, hugged the mascot, and posed for photos. Then, he had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

This year, more than 700 fans participated in the event. They wore coordinating red shirts and sat together in the stadium to watch the Tigers take on the Kansas City Royals.

Thomas Magnum is one of the actor’s most famous roles, but fans will also remember him for the 1992 movie Mr. Baseball. In preparing for the role, he spent three weeks practicing with the Tigers during spring training, taking batting practice and even pinch-hitting during a game.

Last year, the actor wrapped up his long-running role as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods. While the story is continuing with Donnie Wahlberg on Boston Blue, there’s no word on whether Tom will make an appearance (fingers crossed!). He is expected to return to a familiar role when he reprises his role of detective Jesse Stone in an untitled movie.
