Tom Selleck Reflects on Blue Bloods Ending: What He’ll Miss Most and His Final Moments on Set

After 14 incredible seasons, Blue Bloods is nearing its final episode, and Tom Selleck, who has portrayed NYPD Police Commissioner Frank Reagan since the show’s inception, recently opened up about what it has meant to him and what it was like to film his final scenes. With the series concluding in December, Selleck reflected on his time on set, the lasting bonds he formed with his castmates, and the emotions surrounding the end of an era.

Throughout his long career, Selleck has become known not only for his iconic roles—such as Magnum in Magnum, P.I.—but also for his warmth and humor in interviews. Over the years, he’s expressed deep admiration for the Blue Bloods family and their dedication to the show. In his recent conversations, he made it clear that he’ll miss the camaraderie and the special moments shared with the cast and crew.

One of the most poignant aspects of Blue Bloods has always been the Reagan family’s weekly Sunday dinners. Fittingly, Selleck’s last scene was one of those memorable family dinners—a full-circle moment, as it was also the first scene he filmed when the series began 14 years ago.

Selleck recalled:
“My last scene was ironically family dinner. That was also the first scene I shot on the show 15 years ago! I’m not going to tell you everything about the last episode…but the family dinner kind of reunites the Reagan family. Erin’s daughter Nicky [Sami Gayle] was there and so was Jack [Tony Terraciano], Danny’s older son. Everybody agreed with me that we should close the set for the family dinner and not exploit that.”

Reflecting on the emotional weight of the final day of filming, Selleck described how difficult it was for the entire cast, many of whom had become like family.
“We were shooting for hours, and all of a sudden, they said ‘Well, that was the last shot.’ There was crying and an enormous amount of hugs. Donnie [Wahlberg] was really broken up; he didn’t say much. Bridget [Moynahan] spoke. Just about everybody said something.”

Despite finishing his scenes a few days earlier than the rest of the cast, Selleck made the trip back from Los Angeles, where he had been filming a commercial, to be present on the final day of Blue Bloods shooting.
“It was hard, but I didn’t want to just stay home; I wanted to be there, and I felt an obligation to share the experience,” he said. His dedication to the show and its cast shines through in his decision to return for those last moments, a testament to the deep bond forged over more than a decade.

As the series comes to a close, Selleck looks back on the journey with immense gratitude. While he hinted at “positive surprises” in the final episodes, he avoided spoiling any major plot points. What’s clear, however, is the special place Blue Bloods holds in his heart.

With rumors of a potential spinoff swirling, Selleck’s portrayal of Frank Reagan may not be the last we see of the Reagan family on screen. But for now, fans can expect an emotional farewell filled with the heartfelt moments that have defined the show from the very beginning.

As Blue Bloods prepares to say goodbye, viewers and cast members alike are cherishing the final scenes, marking the end of an era for one of TV’s most beloved dramas.
