Tom Selleck Reveals What ‘Blue Bloods’ Left Unexplored About Frank Reagan

Blue Bloods is ending, but there is one thing that the show still needs to include. The procedural stars Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, the patriarch of a family filled with police officers. The show has run for 14 seasons and will be coming to an end on December 13, 2024. While a show about the Reagan family tree could be on the horizon, it is unlikely that Frank will be making his return for long. The spin-off will likely focus on younger members of the family with less experienced and expensive stars.

Yet, while the show is ending, it has not accomplished everything that it needed to. In an interview with TV Insider, Selleck revealed that there was one storyline that he always hoped to see. Selleck always wanted to see Frank flirting more. Though he did not necessarily need to see a relationship, he would have loved to play a more flirtatious version of his renowned character. Check out his full quote below:

Everybody says, “Well, it’d be nice to see [Frank] have a relationship.” If I had any regrets, it would be that because they weren’t writing a relationship, he didn’t get to flirt often enough. But that didn’t fit what became our format… [As for his reporter friend,] yes, she was an old pal of his, played by Margaret Colin, who I knew from Three Men and a Baby. Frank’s not dead! He still wears his wedding ring, but he’s not beyond needing somebody and flirting with them . But we had first three stories each episode and then four when Vanessa [Ray] became a regular so there’s not really room for that. I would have had fun playing it, but you just can’t do it all.

What Selleck’s Wishes Would Have Meant For Blue Bloods

Frank Would Have Been A More Developed Character

es after his wife’s death. He still wore his wedding ring as a sign of his devotion, but he rarely flirted. Adding in a flirtatious element to his character could have made him more three-dimensional. Frank made his name as a father and grandfather to Joe Hill and others, but he rarely gets romantic.

In procedurals, flirtatious characters also add an element of drama to every scene. The will-they-won’t-they element is more than enough to add a season-long question that viewers can find as compelling as the characters themselves do. A flirtatious Frank could have been perfect for that perspective. Unfortunately, it never came to be. Selleck’s comments imply that there will be no flirtatious Frank in season 14 part two.

Our Take On Selleck’s Frank Frustrations

Blue Bloods Is Ending Too Soon

The reality is that it would have been interesting to see a new side to Frank’s character. Unfortunately, it never came to be. The show is simply ending too soon. That finale is coming because the show is filmed in New York City with easily recognizable actors, making for an extremely expensive production. The show is still popular and retained strong viewership numbers even with the ending approaching. There is simply no time for the show to develop a full relationship for Frank before it ends. Blue Bloods‘ early conclusion made it relatively impossible.
