Donnie Wahlberg hasn’t shied away from sharing his emotions as Blue Bloods wraps up its 14-season run. Normally one to take to his own Instagram to let it all out, Donnie took a moment to reflect on national television alongside Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on an episode of TODAY.
“Tom Selleck never really shows up at Donnie’s scenes,” the 55-year-old actor pointed out to the hosts. “You know, it’s Danny world and Frank Reagan world, right?”
During filming for the 14th season, though, Donnie said that Frank showed up.
“He was there watching,” Donnie recalled. “I looked across the room and saw him standing there. And Tom, you know, he’s a really serious, focused man. And he likes to cover up his emotions. He doesn’t like to show vulnerability. And I looked across, and he had tears in his eyes.”
The moment was surreal for Donnie—one he feels immensely grateful for.
“To watch this man on TV as a little kid, and—you know, in a family where we didn’t know, you know, if the lights were going to get turned off tonight and if I’d ever be able to watch TV again—to suddenly now I’m working with this man, and he’s there to support me on my last day of work,” he revealed to Hoda and Jenna while choking back tears. “It just filled me with tremendous humility. I get emotional about it still. It’s really more gratitude—it’s not ‘sad-itude.’ You know, it’s gratitude for sure.”
Donnie isn’t the only one grateful for his and Tom’s years on Blue Bloods—fans are too.
“Best show on TV! I can’t believe it’s ending—I’ve tuned in for Tom and Donnie for years,” one fan commented on TODAY’s Instagram clip of Donnie’s emotional encounter. “Love Blue Bloods and so sad to see it come to an end,” another fan wrote. “Donnie is a gem and Tom Selleck is and always has been a class act. The end of Blue Bloods is heartbreaking,” someone else chimed in.
The final eight episodes of Blue Bloods began premiering on Friday, October 18. Tune in for a few final Reagan family dinners—and remember, you can always stream old episodes on Paramount+.
