BLUE BLOODS fans have been anxiously awaiting news about its spinoff BOSTON BLUE, and CBS just revealed a new cast member.
Sonequa Martin-Green will join Donnie Wahlberg and the cast as a detective on the show. She will play “Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family, who is partnered with Danny Reagan,” per Variety.
“We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. And I feel that we’ll love the Peters too,” Martin-Green said. “I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I’m grateful for it. I think we’re going to have a good time.”
Co-star and executive producer Donnie Wahlberg said that the actress “not the first choice” but “the only choice” for the role.
He added, “One thing about BLUE BLOODS and how beloved it was is because there are so many law enforcement families in this country. There’s not just the Reagans. They’re in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family.”
He noted the importance of telling other stories outside of the Reagans: “You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.”
Martin-Green is known for her roles in THE WALKING DEAD, STAR TREK, NEW GIRL, ONCE UPON A TIME and, most recently, the movie MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE.
Outside of acting, Martin-Green is also outspoken about her faith. Her Instagram bio reads, “Yeshua is my Hero. Love is my Life.” On her page, she shared a video about something God taught her about being a wife.
“God said to me ‘You cannot be angry at the man you have not helped him become.’ I was like ‘Did I hear that right?’” She added “We have such a responsibility to each other.”
“We all were passionate about keeping the world alive and keeping the Reagan family alive and that legacy alive, and it wasn’t meant to be until BOSTON BLUE,” the actor explained. “You know, I had to sort of change my lens a little bit and say, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not I’m not moving on from BLUE BLOODS. I actually have a chance to keep BLUE BLOODS alive.”
Martin-Green shared how she feels about working with Donnie Walhberg.
“It’s been a miraculous journey. Already. I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful,” she said.
“We were friends, we were partners, we were brothers. Like, so like, so quick. Like, automatically. And I just so appreciate his heart and his passion and his vision, and I, and I know that it’s going to, I know that it’s just going to spill over into this new world that we’re creating.”
BOSTON BLUE is set to air this fall on Fridays at 10/9c.
