Tracker Season 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Tracker Season 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

CBS struck gold with their exciting procedural series Tracker throughout its first two seasons thus far, but will the network pick the show up for season 3? Based on the novel The Never Game by Jeffrey Deaver, the series concerns Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley), a survivalist who uses his excellent tracking skills to make a living by claiming rewards and finding missing people. Besides the simple-but-effective narrative structure that the series employs, Tracker has also managed to thrill by introducing Shaw’s complicated past, which unravels like a mystery as each episode progresses.

Season 2 of Tracker continues to introduce elements of Colter Shaw’s family life, including his estranged brother, played by Jensen Ackles, and the mystery around his father’s murder. This ongoing storyline helps elevate Tracker above many of the other procedurals on TV, and gives the series a chance to grow and change the longer it stays on the air. This sort of incentive keeps viewers tuning in week after week, and it gives CBS a good reason to pick the Justin Hartley-led program up for more seasons. However, Tracker season 3 hasn’t been renewed by CBS yet.

Tracker Season 2 Is Not Confirmed
CBS Hasn’t Ordered More Episodes Yet

there’s little doubt that Tracker will once again be an unmitigated smash, and its renewal is only a matter of time.

The debut season of Tracker was a complete success, and it arrived at a pivotal time for CBS, who was reeling from the 2023 Hollywood strikes just like every other network. Though it was held over until midseason in early 2024, the new arrival was a smash-hit for CBS and quickly scored a season 2 renewal. With all that said, the network hasn’t picked up Tracker for a third season yet, though it isn’t a cause for alarm. While season 2 will undoubtedly be as big (if not bigger) than its predecessor, it isn’t big enough to score a preemptive renewal.

Long-running hits like NCIS are usually only ordered one season at a time, and with Tracker season 2’s arrival still so fresh, it will likely take some time for CBS to make their decision. New arrivals can sometimes flourish in their debut seasons, but flounder in their sophomore outings, and that makes networks cautious about moving too hastily. On the other hand, there’s little doubt that Tracker will once again be an unmitigated smash, and its renewal is only a matter of time.

Like most procedurals, the cast of Tracker is a diverse and large ensemble with characters that come and go from episode to episode. However, Colter Shaw’s team is the heart and soul of the program, and they’ll all probably return in season 3. Though Robin Weigert left the role of Teddi Bruin after season 1, there aren’t any other major changes expected as the series hits its stride. Naturally, Justin Hartley will be back as “rewardist” Colter Shaw, and with him comes Abby McEnany as Velma Bruin, Eric Graise as Bobby Exley, and Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene.

The show also features many supporting characters, though their status in future seasons is less certain. Jensen Ackles has impressed so far as Colter’s estranged brother, Russell, and he’ll likely return. Likewise, Lee Tergesen will likely be back as Ashton Shaw, Colter’s father who appears in flashbacks. Wendy Crewson should also be back as Mary Dove Shaw, Colter’s mother.

Tracker Season 3 Story Details
More Rewards & More Information About Colter’s Past

Though Tracker very much follows a classic procedural format, it is unique because it also employs an overarching narrative. This makes predicting what happens in season 3 both easy and difficult, and it will largely depend on what happens throughout season 2. However, it’s assumed that season 3 will feature weekly stories involving Colter hunting down missing persons in order to collect rewards. These cases have brought him up against shadowy criminals, strange cults, and have put his life in mortal danger on numerous occasions.

Besides Colter’s rewards, the series has also strung along a fascinating mystery about Colter’s strange childhood, and it has yet to be explained who killed his father. The relationship between Colter and his estranged brother is expected to take on a new direction in season 2, and that could shine a light on their complicated upbringing. However, it’s impossible to know exactly what will happen in Tracker season 3 until more information is made available.
