The following contains major spoilers from Tracker Season 2, Episode 20, “Echo Ridge.”
Tracker has seen Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) solve several cases over the course of two seasons, while simultaneously trying to figure out who killed his father, Ashton. The show’s Season 2 finale, titled “Echo Ridge” may have provided the answer, but there’s a lot more to the story.
Speaking to TV Line, executive producer Elwood Reid revealed that Shaw’s mother, Mary, may not have actually wanted her husband dead because she did not explicitly ask Otto Waldron to push him off a cliff. “I want to make one clarification,” he said. “\[Otto] doesn’t say that mom ordered the murder of his father. He said, ‘She asked me to be up there,’ so there’s much more to that story to unpack.
“We’ve talked a lot about this – that life is messy – and I think that Colter’s life is messier than most other people’s lives,” Reid continued. “I don’t think this is something Colter is ever going to let go of, and I don’t think there’s an easy answer to it. Even though the finale gives you the next big piece of the puzzle, there’s still more out there to mine in that storyline, particularly when it comes to his mother.
The producer also revealed that Tracker Season 3 will explore more about Ashton’s time as a government contractor. “That’s one of the little, weird threads that I’m hoping to pull in Season 3,” Reid explained. “I mean, there’s the stuff that happened with Colter’s family – with his father. There have been a couple mentions — about the father not being who he seems.”
“We’re going to start to unravel that a little bit as far as the Ashton character goes, and I think that will bring in a fun cast of characters,” he added. “I’m hoping in the third season — to have a storyline that \[has] a little bit of what his father may have been involved in. There was an episode, a couple of episodes, where some of that stuff was alluded to in Season 2 that kind of flew by people, but it’s there.”
Tracker Season 3 Will Feature More of Colter’s Mom
Following the big Tracker Season 2 finale reveal, fans can expect to see more of Shaw’s mother (played by Wendy Crewson) in the upcoming season since she lied to her son. “I think she’ll have some presence,” Reid said. “The question is, ‘Why did she lie to Colter? And what are the implications of that?’ And you can see, if you’ve watched the finale that all of that emotion is there. In that moment, Colter is realizing that his mother has possibly lied about his entire childhood.”
Tracker is based on the 2019 Jeffery Deaver novel called The Never Game. “The series follows Colter Shaw, a lone-wolf survivalist, who uses his tracking skills to find missing people and collect rewards, often helping private citizens and law enforcement,” the official synopsis reads. “Driven by his past, he travels the country, solving mysteries while dealing with his fractured family.”
Tracker Season 2 is streaming on Paramount+. Season 3 does not have a release date at this time.
