In an interview with Parade, Wahlberg talked about whether his on-screen father, Commissioner Frank Reagan (Selleck), would venture out into Boston to visit his son in upcoming episodes of Boston Blue. “Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do. And I can’t really get into the details of those conversations, but he’s been very supportive,” Wahlberg revealed.
Naturally, Wahlberg is hoping for the chance to cross paths with Selleck again over the course of Boston Blue. “I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes.”
While Wahlberg didn’t go so far as to outright confirm Selleck would eventually make an appearance in the series, he certainly seemed optimistic that the stars would align. “Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it,” he said.
Selleck’s Blue Bloods character of Frank Reagan may not be the only one who has a cameo appearance, either. “Of course, we’re looking for opportunities to incorporate other Reagans and other characters from Blue Bloods in this show when the time is right,” Wahlberg added. It’s already been confirmed that Bridget Moynahan joined the cast in a special guest starring role, returning as Erin as well as directing an episode.
Boston Blue had its series premiere on CBS on Oct. 17 and is expected to run for 20 episodes. It focuses on Wahlberg’s character of Danny Reagan as he takes a new position with the Boston Police Department after discovering a case involving his young son, Sean (Mika Amonsen).
New Blue Bloods Spinoff Teases Possibilities for Other Returning Cast Members
Before Boston Blue had its premiere, Wahlberg was already seeing potential for the Regan family to be reunited in the new spinoff series. “New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart,” Wahlberg hinted. “[There’s] a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us.”
Boston Blue is already off to a good start following its series premiere, becoming an instant hit on Paramount+, and this makes the odds that more characters will return seem even more likely. It proves that fans remain dedicated to Tom Selleck’s hit police procedural series, even after it ended in 2024. Blue Bloods ran for 14 seasons and aired 293 episodes during its run, telling the story of the fictional Reagan family as they live in New York City and work in law enforcement.
