Will Trent is always providing viewers with tons of shocking twists. In Season 3’s penultimate episode, there were plenty of surprises. First, we learn that Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) is pregnant with her boyfriend, Dr. Seth McDale’s (Scott Foley) baby. Then, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) finally learns who his biological father is. The episode also sets up a terrifying new villain: a domestic terrorist group named the Founders Front.
When that episode leaves off, Seth, along with Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) and Nico (Cora Lu Tran), are all trapped in the hospital with Patient Zero, who has just been brought in with symptoms of some kind of bioweapon attack. Throughout this week’s season finale, almost every character in the series is in some grave danger, and there’s a good chance that the two main characters won’t survive to see Season 4.
The Crew Thwarts the Domestic Terrorists’ Plans in ‘Will Trent’
The Founders Front gang have begun their attack on multiple fronts as the final episode unfolds. They take over the GBI and take Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) hostage. Angie is also in the building when this occurs, and even though she’s concerned about endangering her pregnancy, she goes on the offensive to rescue Amanda (more on that later).
Ormewood, Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson), and Franklin (Kevin Daniels) are also ambushed on the road as they’re trying to transport the antitoxin to the hospital. They’re eventually saved by a teenage group of archery pros, who used flaming arrows to successfully eliminate some of the terrorists who’ve had them all under attack. Ormewood even manages to make a hero move by creating a distraction to take out a nearby sniper. He’s saved by Will, who shows up and kills the sniper at the exact last second before he can shoot Ormewood.
Will and his dad, Sheriff Caleb Broussard (Yul Vazquez), also make headway in their investigation by questioning one of the Founders Front members, Vince (Kevin Dunn). They realize that the group’s next mission is to release a chemical into the air that will kill all of Atlanta.
After capturing one of the members in his home, the two also carve out a tentative path towards a relationship with one another. Will learns that Caleb was actually in love with Will’s mother and had no idea about her pregnancy at all. This information helps shift how Will has been viewing his father (as someone who just abandoned him by choice). Caleb then invites Will to dinner with his wife and him at his home. Will begrudgingly accepts, but this plot point demonstrates that there could be a connection built between father and son in Season 4. They can thwart the bioweapon attack and get the antitoxin to the hospital, where it successfully saves all the patients (including Nico).
The ‘Will Trent’ Season 3 Finale Leaves Us With Two Major Cliffhangers
Angie uses her spy tactics to trick the GBI hostage-takers into a shoot-out. Along with Amanda, they take out many of the Founders Front members, but just as Amanda saves Angie, she takes a shot straight to the chest. Angie frantically calls for help, and Amanda is taken to the hospital. One of the last scenes of the finale is Will going into Amanda’s hospital room to watch over her. With Betty in his arms, he tells Amanda (who is still unconscious) that she has always been a stable presence for him, and that he can’t imagine getting through life without her. He insists that she recover, even though doctors are saying the next 48 hours will be crucial in telling whether she will survive. Amanda is the grounding force behind the GBI (and one of the best characters on Will Trent), but is there a chance that Amanda won’t be back for Season 4?
Just when viewers thought the episode couldn’t get any more uncertain, the Will Trent writers threw another cliffhanger into the mix. The last scene features Ormewood at home in his kitchen, when suddenly his vision starts to get blurry, and as he faintly calls out for Faith, he collapses. She rushes over and sees that he’s perhaps having a seizure, and is clearly in dire straits. She calls 9-1-1, and the episode abruptly ends, with one more of our favorite characters at risk. Ormewood was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, and it seems like this (and perhaps the stress of the day) has contributed to the drastic change in his condition.
‘Will Trent’ Has Set Up Several Compelling Storylines for Next Season
Now, we have cause to worry about the well-being of both Amanda and Ormewood. How would the GBI function without Amanda at the helm, and would Will be able to recover from her possible death? He has already faced so much trauma in his life, but the demise of his mother figure might be too much for him. Similarly, Angie would have an incredibly difficult time if something happened to Ormewood, who has been such a steady partner for her. But it’s not just these cliffhangers that have us on the edge of our seats. We also have confirmation that Angie is continuing with her pregnancy.
In one scene in the finale, she and Will finally get a little bit of closure. They acknowledge that they each thought they’d be together in the future, but now that things have ended between them, their collective dreams of a family with one another are over. Does this mean that Will could actually move forward with his life? Or will he continue to pine for Angie, and perhaps not be able to support her through this next phase of her life?
