Tyler Joseph Andrews on Playing Theo Carver: ‘Exploring the DiMera Side Is So Fun

After landing the job last year, Tyler Joseph Andrews is finally making his debut as the new Theo Carver on Days of Our Lives with the September 9 episode. Due to the soap’s advanced shooting schedule, the young actor has been hard at work for quite some time, and is excited that his family and friends — and DAYS fans — can finally see the fruits of his labor.

Theo… DiMera?

Andrews initially went out for the role of Tate Black (which went to Leo Howard), then was called back again for another audition, though it wasn’t until he booked the gig that he learned he would be playing Theo. The character makes his return to Salem after splitting up with Claire Brady. “He’s coming back sort of lost,” the actor teased to TV Insider, “but he’s trying to find himself and he’s trying to find that purpose that he needs in life. He’s maturing, and he wants to solidify something in Salem for the future.”

Although Theo’s last name is Carver, his mother, Lexie, was Stefano DiMera’s daughter, and DAYS plans to explore that side of Theo’s heritage. “I really love exploring the DiMera side because I get to work with actors like Thaao Penghlis [Tony], who really welcomed me, and he’s really been like an acting teacher for me, just watching him work,” Andrews said. “It’s a different energy working with that side of the family, and it brings a different behavior out of Theo. I think the more he gets involved with the DiMera side of the family, he might adapt some of those attributes that you’re used to seeing with them.”

Perhaps Abe will be able to keep his son from fully turning to his DiMera dark side. In real life, James Reynolds (Abe) has been one of the many DAYS cast members welcoming the new cast member to Salem. “I love working with Jim,” Andrews declared. “He’s really become one of my best friends here. He’s been really great because he’s so knowledgeable, and he’s been doing this for so long. If you just watch him, he teaches you a lot about finding the camera and finding the light. I love being able to go to his room and talk to him because he’s always available and he’ll tell you the old stories about back in the day and how they used to film and all those things, and I really enjoy that.”
