Ever since Virgin River premiered on Netflix five years ago, the small-town romantic drama has become one of the streamer’s most beloved shows. With Seasons 4 and 5 scoring 100% and 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and millions of viewers returning each season, its success has sparked an even bigger plan — a growing Virgin River universe.
The first confirmed expansion is a prequel series exploring the love story of Mel’s parents, Everett (Callum Kerr) and Sarah (Jessica Rothe). But according to showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, that may just be the beginning. Speaking to Swooon, Smith revealed he’s constantly brainstorming ways to expand the world further:
“It’s a rich world with rich characters. Putting romance forward feels like there’s a ton of potential… There’s huge potential. It’s a great story engine.”
Based on Robyn Carr’s bestselling novels, Virgin River has become Netflix’s longest-running scripted drama, thanks to its heartfelt storytelling and ensemble of deeply human characters. And if Smith’s words are any indication, the river is only just beginning to branch out.
Another Robyn Carr Novel Is Getting the Netflix Treatment

Just months before Virgin River returns for Season 6, Netflix is already expanding its partnership with bestselling author Robyn Carr. The streamer has announced the development of a brand-new TV adaptation based on Carr’s Thunder Point novels — reuniting the author with Virgin River executive producer Roma Roth.
The upcoming series will center on Hank Cooper, a drifter who arrives in the small coastal town of Thunder Point to attend a friend’s funeral. But what begins as a brief visit takes an unexpected turn when Cooper inherits a valuable piece of property — and finds himself entangled in the town’s secrets and a new romance that could change his life forever.
With Thunder Point, Netflix aims to capture the same blend of romance, mystery, and heartwarming small-town drama that made Virgin River a global sensation. And if Carr’s track record is any indication, fans are in for another addictive escape.
