While Season 7 of Virgin River is still awaiting a release date, some exciting news has just arrived. According to Variety, the romantic drama series — starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson — has just received an early Season 8 renewal at Netflix. This news comes as no surprise to those familiar with the series, as it was previously renewed for Season 7 ahead of Season 6’s debut.
Based on Robyn Carr’s book series of the same name, Virgin River follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe’s (Breckenridge) journey as she leaves her past life behind and starts over in the remote titular town. Throughout the course of the series, viewers have witnessed Mel experience the highs and lows of living in the picturesque fictitious countryside, as well as her brewing romantic relationship with Henderson’s Jack Sheridan. The sixth season saw Mel and Jack tie the knot, anticipating new beginnings. But as the two look forward to their future together, the season also transported audiences back to the past — in the 1970s, particularly — as it also recounts the story of Mel’s parents during their younger years.
‘Virgin River’ Is Not Just a Streaming Hit — It’s Also a Critical Darling at Netflix
Virgin River has continued to bring in a strong viewership record for the streaming giant since the first season debuted in 2019. Thanks in large part to its loyal fanbase, the sixth season even took the top spot of the most-watched English-language series back in December of last year, proving that fans are still eager to witness what unfolds in their beloved romantic drama series — even over five years since its debut. So, the early renewal announcement comes as no surprise, given the show’s strong reception from both critics and viewers alike.
In addition to Breckenridge, Henderson, and Lawrence, the Virgin River cast also includes Jenny Cooper as Joey Barnes, Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine Roberts, Annette O’Toole as Hope McCrea, Tim Matheson as Vernon “Doc” Mullins, and more.
