What Happened to Cruz, Novak, Holt & Capp After Macy’s Devastating Moment md13

Macy’s Unfortunate Fate and What Happened to Chicago Fire’s Cruz, Novak, Holt, & Capp

Several Firehouse 51 fan favorites landed in jeopardy amid the chaos of One Chicago’s three-part crossover.

No one likes it when a member of the One Chicago family gets hurt while saving the day, and Chihards found themselves on the edge of their seats after several cherished members of the Firehouse 51 crew were fighting for their lives in the hospital during Chicago Fire‘s action-packed crossover event with Chicago P.DandChicago Med.

The three-part One Chicago crossover wasted no time jumping into the action as the Firehouse 51 crew and Intelligence Unit officers teamed up with the FBI — now including P.D. icon Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiradakos) — to handle a harrowing mass casualty event. After a commercial flight went dark without any emergency signals, the FBI and firefighters prepared all hands on deck while anticipating a rocky autopilot landing and a potential hijacking onboard. However, after the firefighters breached the airplane and discovered over 150 passengers and crew members were all dead due to a mysterious toxic chemical on board, the first responders realized they were looking at a large-scale hazmat scenario that they hadn’t anticipated.

To make matters worse, the first responders who found themselves on the frontlines ended up exposed to the deadly toxin, forcing all of the Windy City units to join forces to find an antidote before time ran out.

How the Firehouse 51 heroes land in trouble during the 1C crossover

With no movement or communications coming from the commercial flight, Firehouse 51’s Lt. Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) valiantly volunteered to breach entry and get an idea of what was happening, bringing along rookie firefighters Holt and Macy, who were eager to see some action. But action was the last thing they found after Macy and Cruz entered the plane and discovered a plane full of dead passengers and crew members.

Cruz and Macy were taken aback by the nightmarish scene, but upon realizing this was likely a hazmat situation, Cruz made quick moves to leave, pulling a frozen Macy out of the plane behind him. Shaken by the ordeal, rookies Macy and Holt were taken to the hospital to decontaminate and monitor their conditions, while veteran Cruz continued helping however he could.

After breaching the plane with proper hazmat gear, Severide (Taylor Kinney) was able to find one surviving passenger hiding in a restroom, swiftly bringing the sick woman to paramedics Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and Lizzy Novak (Jocelyn Hudon). Upon realizing the surviving passenger was pregnant in her third trimester, Lizzy and Violet mobilized Ambo 61 to Gaffney Medical Center.

However, red tape from federal agents trying to contain the situation prevented their ambulance from being able to reach Gaffney’s Emergency Department. Violet and Novak found themselves trapped in the vehicle with the exposed victim, who soon began going into labor. As if the situation wasn’t high-stakes enough, Novak’s protective mask got knocked off after the passenger woke up and panicked, resulting in the passenger’s blood being sprayed on Lizzy’s face.

Violet urgently encouraged Novak to decontaminate and desperate to do something, Violet called Gaffney OBGYN Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) for help, and sure enough, Hannah soon climbed aboard the ambulance to perform an emergency C-section. While the baby fortunately survived, Lizzy was devastated when the mother failed to make it. Lizzy, Novak, and Hannah were soon forced to decontaminate and quarantine along with Macy and Holt at Gaffney.

They weren’t the only first responders in serious trouble, either. As Cruz and Capp (Randy Flagler) were riding along in Truck 81, Cruz began complaining about shortness of breath. But right when Capp offered to take over driving, he suffered a sudden seizure. Cruz was helpless to help Capp in his own worsening state, veering Truck 81 into an abandoned lot before they both passed out. It didn’t take long for their Firehouse 51 colleagues to note Truck 81’s lack of communication, and they rushed the firefighters to Gaffney as soon as they could.

After the Intelligence Unit and FBI determined that the passengers had been killed with a deadly nerve agent accidentally released by a drug mule on board, they realized there had actually been two capsules, with the remaining one illegally salvaged from the smuggler’s body in the morgue. More disaster was coming.

Who survived from Firehouse 51 — and who didn’t make it

With all of the exposed firefighters and paramedics at Gaffney for monitoring, it didn’t take long for Macy’s health to take a rapid downturn. After Macy died within seconds of alerting Gaffney doctors, the tragedy served as a horrific omen of what was to come to the rest of the exposed. They were officially on a race against time to not only track down the nerve agent’s buyer and prevent whatever original attack plan existed, but to retrieve the nerve agent intact to develop an antidote for the exposed first responders.

Macy had died, Capp and Holt weren’t improving, and while Violet remained stable, Cruz and Novak’s condition continued to worsen due to their heightened exposure. The stakes were higher than ever as Upton and Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) made slow progress on the case, so the Gaffney doctors took caution by recommending that the first responders connect with their families amid the life-or-death situation.

The Gaffney team, desperate to help in any way while the Intelligence Unit retrieved the remaining nerve agent capsule for an antidote, administered a catalytic bio-scavenger to break down nerve agents before they could cause damage. But their steadfast efforts proved to be futile as Novak and Cruz continued to worsen.

In true One Chicago style, the Intelligence Unit and Firehouse 51 crew were able to track down the perp and retrieve the deadly capsule with mere hours to spare. Not only were countless lives saved, but the Gaffney doctors were able to develop an antidote in time to see a steady recovery among Holt, Capp, Cruz, and Novak. Once again, the Windy City heroes saved the day, but not without immense sacrifice and several nail-biting close calls along the way.
