Noah Sexton (Roland Buck III) was a key player on Chicago Med as a medical student and later resident at the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. He brought a lot of heart to his work in the Emergency Department, often advocating for his patients beyond his scope of duties.
Plus, he gave Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Officer Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) a run for their money by being half of another powerful sibling duo in the One Chicago family. Noah’s sister is the beloved nurse-turned-Nurse Practitioner, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).
Revisit Noah’s full storyline on Chicago Med, leading up to his departure and brief return.
When did Noah Sexton join Chicago Med?
Noah’s first appearance was in Season 1, Episode 5 (“Malignant”). He was seen conferring with Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo), another medical student, as they ordered labs for a patient who was in a coma. Noah later froze when he helped Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) help a patient with a gunshot wound.
In the wake of his embarrassment, Noah lied to Dr. Choi, saying that it was his idea to order the specific lab work for the coma patient, taking full credit for Sarah’s work. “I was just nervous and I wanted him to like me,” Noah told Sarah when she confronted him about this. He promised to tell Dr. Choi about the error, but asked Sarah to not tell his sister.
Is Noah the nurse April’s brother in Chicago Med?
Yes! And from the very beginning, it was clear that April was protective of Noah. In Season 1, Episode 5 (“Malignant”), Chicago Fire‘s Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) — who had a romantic history with April — spotted Noah in the Emergency Department and asked her about Noah, questioning if he even knew “an ass from an elbow.”
“At least he’s got a big sister who can show him around,” Severide said. Later in that episode, April cancelled a date with Severide to help Noah study for a test.
Noah was close enough with his sister that he often knew when something was happening. In Season 5, Episode 10 (“Guess It Don’t Matter Anymore”), he caught wind of April’s sparks with Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) before anyone else. “So, you want to tell me what’s going on between you and Dr. Marcel?” he asked her.
The two also did some great work together. In Season 5, Episode 15 (“I Will Do No Harm”), Noah and April responded to a call in which a man took too much heart medication and had to keep jogging in order to keep his heart rate high enough for him to stay alive. April convinced Noah to place a pacer in the man while he was on the treadmill, and ultimately saved his life.
Noah’s Harder Cases on Chicago Med
In Season 3, Episode 5 (“Mountains and Molehills”), Noah dealt with his first big death. He had to break the news to a mother that her son had died from a hemorrhage, and the patient’s brother lashed out at him. In a true show of his character, Noah did not press charges and instead expressed empathy for the brother, telling Reese, “He just found out his brother is dead. How is he supposed to respond?”
Another major moment for Noah occurred seasons later when he and April were on a jog together in Season 5, Episode 6 (“It’s All in the Family”), and they stumbled upon a woman being attacked by a group of men in an alleyway. They chased the attackers away and began to treat her, but she told them she was illegal and didn’t want to go to the hospital. When she lost consciousness, they brought her in and learned that she was tied to a violent gang in the area; the attack was part of an initiation.
Noah did his best to keep the woman, Jacinta, safe but, in Episode 8 (“Too Close to the Sun”), he was rushed into the ED after being attacked by the gang. He tried to hide this information from April, since she had asked him not to meet with Jacinta, but she discovered the truth when Dr. Marcel had to tell Officer Halstead about Jacinta for their investigation.
Why did Noah leave Chicago Med?
Noah was fired from Gaffney in Season 6, Episode 5 (“When Your Heart Rules Your Head”). He and Dr. Marcel treated a patient who had helped his wife with assisted suicide after she suffered from a debilitating illness, which Noah considered to be “an act of mercy.” The man had also given himself enough medicine to die with his wife, but he survived long enough to be found and was treated against his will. Noah left a syringe of lidocaine close to the patient so that he could use it to kill himself and, when the patient coded, Ethan figured out what had happened.
Knowing that any information about the case would end in serious repercussions for Noah, April begged Ethan to not tell the police. Ethan deliberately kept the information from Officer Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) but still kicked Noah out of his program. “You’re fired for negligence,” Ethan told him. “You won’t be reported to the medical board, and you can file for a new residency somewhere else.”
When did Noah Sexton return to Chicago Med?
In Season 8, Episode 9 (“This Could Be the Start of Something New”), Noah returned to Chicago to be in his sister’s wedding. Although he didn’t have too much screen time, he can be seen in the line of Ethan’s groomsmen, standing next to Will. He also threw rice at the happy couple to send them off.
April and Ethan left Gaffney to begin a service called “Docs on Wheels,” serving the community together.
