Luke Grimes was confident that his time playing Kayce Dutton in the Paramount Network drama series Yellowstone had come to an end after the show concluded following a five-season run. “On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me,” the actor shared with People Magazine. However, as luck would have it, CBS announced they were developing another spin-off series, Y: Marshals, focused on Grimes’ character. One of the earliest thoughts the actor had after the show was announced was: “Where do you go from there?” Kayce had gotten a better ending than most characters, and his story seemed to have reached a natural conclusion.
But alas, Kayce will be back. The Yellowstone world is rich with characters, and Grimes said that viewers should expect to see a mix of the old and new. “There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels,” he said. While he did not share who from Yellowstone viewers should expect, it would be a treat for fans to see their favorite characters. Y: Marshals‘ official description reads:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Grimes was not going to do the show for the sake of doing it. “We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” he shared. He promised that fans will be satisfied with Kayce’s new story in the spin-off. “If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well,” the actor said. While transitioning to a new set “will be weird,” Grimes is looking forward to it.
Y: Marshals doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but stay tuned to Collider for more updates. In the meantime, stream Yellowstone on Paramount+.
