Where Is Hank Voight? Chicago P.D. Explains His Absence in March 18 Episode md18

Find out why the Intelligence Unit commander was missing during Chicago P.D.’s latest.

As the tenacious commander of the Intelligence Unit for more than a decade of Chicago P.D. chills and thrills, you better believe Chihards were quick to notice Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was away from his post on Season 13’s latest episode.

After some time away from the squad to help his father on Season 13 of P.D., the spotlight was on Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) during P.D.’s latest (“Live and Die by Your CI”). It didn’t take long for Chihards to discover that Voight wouldn’t be weighing in on the latest action after Ruzek was contacted by a DEA agent about a missing criminal informant. But where was Voight amid the blood-pumping investigation?

Find out why the Intelligence Unit commander was M.I.A. on Chicago P.D. Season 13, Episode 15 (“Live and Die By Your CI”), below.

Where was Hank Voight on tonight’s episode of Chicago P.D.? (March 18, 2026)

Voight is out of town taking care of some red tape, which Chihards discovered after the Intelligence Unit officers launched an investigation into a missing criminal informant. After discovering a former C.I. had gone cold on a D.E.A. agent, Ruzek agreed to set up a meet-up, only to narrowly survive a pop-up shooting.

While Ruzek was able to escape the gun fight unscathed, his wife and partner Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) was eager to know what made the meet-up go belly-up. Ruzek had no clue, fretting over potentially blowing his CI’s cover for the sake of the D.E.A.’s concerns.

“We’ve got to call Voight,” Ruzek told Burgess. “I don’t feel comfortable handing this off to the D.E.A.”

“We can’t call Voight,” Burgess said. “He’s in Springfield for mandatory recertification.”

“Alright, well,” Ruzek shrugged. “Then I think you’re up, my love.”

Hank Voight has been navigating his “roots” on Chicago P.D. Season 13

Frankly, Voight has had little time to rest on Season 13 of Chicago P.D. as he navigates a grueling blackmail scheme. After traumatic details from Voight’s childhood were nearly twisted into a smear campaign against Voight’s late father, he refused to back down.

“[Voight’s] dealing with a personal attack on himself,” P.D. show runner Gwen Sigan told NBC Insider while chatting about Season 13’s theme of “roots” and how Voight’s past has some back to haunt him. “So we get some heavy insights into him.”

While Chihards have watched Voight jump herculean hurdles to protect his Intelligence Unit, it’s been fascinating to see his own family land in jeopardy. Famously tight-lipped, these threats have forced Voight to be more vulnerable this season, showcasing a new side to the P.D. fan favorite.

“He’s not a very open person, so he wouldn’t be just sharing stories of what it was like for him when he was a kid with anyone,” Sigan said. “So we wanted to create something that would force him to sort of get into that and talk about it and reflect on it. And for us as an audience to understand him in a new light and to get some of these stories that I think do explain a lot of why he is the way he is.”

Watch Chicago P.D. Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
