Where Is Iain Armitage Now? Inside His Life After Young Sheldon — Including His Unexpected New Passion

From getting his pilot’s license to a potential ‘Big Little Lies’ return, here’s what Iain Armitage has been up to since ‘Young Sheldon’ ended in 2024

Iain Armitage has never been a stranger to the spotlight.

The actor first rose to fame when he was a toddler thanks to his YouTube channel Iain Loves Theatre, where he gave reviews of his favorite plays and musicals. Armitage eventually started getting invited to the Tony Awards, where he interviewed stars like Vanessa Hudgens, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Matthew Morrison.

But this wasn’t the first time Armitage was exposed to Hollywood. Both of his parents are in the entertainment industry — his dad is the prominent theater actor Euan Morton and his mom is producer Lee Armitage. When he was just 7 years old, Armitage got his big break by landing the role of Ziggy in HBO’s Big Little Lies; in 2017, he scored another leading role, this time as a young Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon.

After seven seasons and 141 episodes, Young Sheldon had its finale on May 16, 2024. “I don’t think you can wrap up a seven-year experience that has been as wonderful as this,” Armitage told Entertainment Tonight in 2024. “Every single person that works here — every cast member, every crew member — works so hard … They’re so funny and they really feel like family.”

But where is Iain Armitage now, and where can audiences see him next? Read on to discover what’s next for the promising young actor.

Who is Iain Armitage?

Armitage is an actor who got his start at a very young age. His first major role was on the hit 2017 HBO series Big Little Lies, landing the gig when he was just 7 years old. In the show, Armitage stars as Ziggy, a young boy who is unfairly accused of bullying. The series became a massive hit — earning 16 Emmy nominations for its first season — and Armitage reprised his role for the show’s second run. There is currently a third season in the works, according to the series’ stars.

Later in 2017, Armitage nabbed another major role — this time as a leading actor. In Young Sheldon, Armitage plays the titular character, a younger version of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. The show follows Sheldon through his childhood in Texas, including all the hilarious ups and downs that he experiences as a genius living in a town that simply doesn’t understand him.

On top of his television work, Armitage has also starred in films like Scoob! (2020) and PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021).

Armitage hasn’t held another role since Young Sheldon concluded. Instead, he told PEOPLE in October 2024 that he’s been enjoying time with family and has been working towards his pilot’s license. “I just got my pilot’s license, or my student pilot’s license,” he said. “I hopefully will get my private [pilot’s license] when I’m 17. And I’ve been having a bunch of fun flying while I’m here in L.A.” While he’s enjoying taking some time off, he’s still working towards his next project, saying, “I’m definitely doing auditions and stuff.”

He’s also been keeping up with his past costars, regularly posting photos on Instagram with Ed Begley Jr., Jim Parsons and Wallace Shawn.

In Dec. 2024, Armitage even ran into both of his on-screen moms. During a White House visit on Dec. 6, he met up with Zoe Perry, who plays his mom on Young Sheldon; then on Dec. 30, Armitage reunited with Shailene Woodley, who plays his mother on Big Little Lies.

“Last night I got to see my first fake Mama, @shailenewoodley in a play on Broadway!” Armitage wrote on Instagram. “She’s in Cult of Love at @2stnyc.”

He then went on to credit Woodley for making him feel comfortable joining the Big Little Lies cast. “When I was 7 I got cast in Big Little Lies,” he wrote. “Before we headed to LA to begin filming, I had a FaceTime call with Shailene and I asked her what it would all be like. She assured me that it would be fun, ‘like playing’ and wow, she was so right.”

Iain even added that his great experience on BLL inspired him to keep pursuing a career in Hollywood, writing, “I’m certain that the joy we had on Big Little Lies is the reason I stayed with acting.”

What will Iain Armitage star in next?

So far, there are no publicly confirmed projects lined up for Armitage. But Big Little Lies season 3 is unofficially going into production. While HBO hasn’t given any comment yet, stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have been very vocal that the next season is in its early stages.

Kidman first gave positive news about Big Little Lies season 3 in 2023 and continued to be optimistic about the show’s future in 2024. “We’re moving fast and furious,” the actress told Variety. “We’re in good shape.”

In October 2024, Witherspoon even told E! that they have Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty working on the season 3 script, saying, “We’re in waiting for Liane Moriarty. She’s going to be turning in something very soon. We’re back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters.”

Armitage is also on board for a third season. In a May 2024 interview on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, Armitage said he’d “be honored to be back” for a third season.

Will Iain Armitage reprise his role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage?

A few months after Young Sheldon concluded in 2024, another spinoff series premiered called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which follows Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie (Montana Jordan), and his relationship with Mandy (Emily Osment).

So far there’s been no official word on whether fans will see Sheldon on Georgie and Mandy, but Armitage has already shown his excitement for the show. In July 2024, Armitage shared a photo of himself on the Georgie & Mandy set, writing, “What an exciting honor to attend the first taping of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage!! It’s always fun to be on the Warner Brothers lot – I grew up there!”

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has already seen a few Young Sheldon actors make guest appearances, including Perry, Annie Potts, Raegan Revord and Lance Barber.
