The amazing Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) is one of Chicago Med‘s most beloved medical practitioners.
Maggie is known for fervently protecting her patients as well as the close-knit relationships with her fellow Gaffney Medical staffers. Maggie is also been thrown some of the most compelling plotlines throughout the show: She’s a cancer survivor, a fiercely loyal friend, and an exemplary physician.
Introduced in the debut episode of Chicago Med, Maggie has been at the center of dozens of high-risk cases — leading her to brush shoulders with several Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. faces throughout her tenure. Although she’s been through a lot, Maggie still maintains her tight bonds with those around her and finds her way into fans’ hearts, season after season.

What happened when Maggie Lockwood got cancer on Chicago Med?
In Season 4, Episode 14 (“Can’t Unring That Bell”), Maggie donated her kidney to an old friend who desperately needed a transplant. However, at the end of that season (“With a Brave Heart”), the recipient came back to the hospital and was diagnosed with cancer, which she had gotten from the transplanted kidney. In Season 5, Episode 1 (“Never Going Back to Normal”), it was officially confirmed that Maggie had breast cancer.
Not wanting any of her staff to learn of her diagnosis, Maggie received chemotherapy at a nearby hospital. As she began losing her hair, she wore a convincing wig to keep the secret but finally revealed her cancer diagnosis to the nursing staff in Season 5, Episode 5 (“Got a Friend in Me”).
Luckily, the chemo was successful, and Maggie was officially in remission in Season 5, Episode 16 (“Who Should Be the Judge”).
But her cancer diagnosis led to a deep romantic connection she hadn’t expected.
Maggie Lockwood’s Relationship With Ben Campbell on Chicago Med
In Season 5, Episode 7, (“Who Knows What Tomorrow Brings”), Maggie met Ben Campbell (Charles Malik Whitfield) while receiving one of her chemo treatments. The two began flirting during their time at the infusion center and bonding over their shared diagnosis, but in the following episode (“Too Close to the Sun”), Ben came down with measles due to being immunocompromised.
Maggie attempted to sneak Ben out of the hospital as his health deteriorated but saw the public she’d be exposing to the virus and chose to bring him back to the hospital. Fortunately, in Episode 8 (“I Can’t Imagine the Future”), Ben’s health was on the mend.
At the end of Season 5, Episode 17 (“The Ghosts of the Past”), Maggie and Ben officially tied the knot and celebrated their good health and future together.
Are Maggie Lockwood and Ben Campbell getting a divorce on Chicago Med?
Maggie and Ben’s relationship hit the rocks in Season 8 of Chicago Med after Maggie reconnected with her ex-boyfriend from high school, Grant Young (Wayne T. Carr).
Grant was the father of the daughter that Maggie had given birth to and put up for adoption when the two for teens. Maggie sought out and reconnected with the young woman, Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper), in Season 6 (more on that below) and Vanessa subsequently sought out Grant, who Maggie hadn’t seen in years.
As Vanessa attempted to build a relationship with Grant, it became impossible for Maggie to avoid him, even though it was clear from the beginning that Grant still harbored feelings for her.
The former high school sweethearts began to spend more time together, but Maggie failed to tell Ben the two had reconnected. Her deception came to a head after Grant showed up at the hospital to give Maggie a ride in the car he’d had since they were together high school. The two nearly kissed, but got into a dangerous car accident that forced Grant to be rushed to Med.
Maggie still tried to hide the situation from her husband, but Ben ultimately learned of the accident and Maggie’s reunion with Grant. Because she’d been dishonest — and even though nothing officially untoward had occurred — Ben became convinced his wife was having an affair, prompting him to ask for a break from her.
In Season 9 of Chicago Med, Chi-Hards learned that Maggie and Ben’s marriage hadn’t improved — Ben asked for a divorce. In Season 9, Episode 2 (“This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us”), Maggie and Ben were seen fighting during divorce mediation over who would get custody of their cat.
Maggie eventually admitted she wasn’t blameless for their failed marriage, a revelation which inspired her to give up the cat in hopes of reassembling some sort of peace with Ben.
Does Maggie Lockwood have children?
Following her breast cancer diagnosis in Season 5, Maggie decided it was time to reconnect with her daughter — Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) — in Season 6. Maggie had gotten pregnant as a teen and given Vanessa up for adoption.
She visited Vanessa’s medical school in Season 6, Episode 13 (“What A Tangled Web We Weave”), ran into her, and then sang the praises of Gaffney’s residency program. As a result, in Season 6, Episode 14 (“A Red Pill, a Blue Pill”), Vanessa officially became a student doctor at Maggie’s hospital.
She and Vanessa became intertwined through their work but, when Maggie finally revealed that she was Vanessa’s birth mother, the fallout was initially a challenge for the two, though they ultimately fostered a productive relationship.
Maggie and Ben also came close to parenthood when they tried to adopt Auggie Roberts (Christopher Farrar), a foster child who’d received treatment at the hospital in Season 6 of Chicago Med. However, Auggie’s biological brother had been adopted by a nice family in California, and the adoptive parents wanted to reunite the boys. In Season 6, Episode 8 (“Fathers and Mothers, Daughters and Sons”), Maggie and Ben made the tough call that it would be best for Auggie to move to California and be with his brother.
Is Maggie Lockwood leaving Chicago Med?
Maggie’s commitment to her workplace was put to the test in Season 8 when Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) attempted to make the hospital a for-profit institution, threatening all of their work. Maggie became fed up with the new leader and eventually decided to interview at other medical centers.
Maggie came clean about looking for other jobs to Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), who was scared of losing her right-hand woman. “I feel guilty even thinking about leaving,” Maggie told Sharon. “All the changes that are going down in the ED and all this chatter about going for-profit. I have a bad feeling about the direction that Jack is taking us.”
After Dayton got the boot in the Season 8 Chicago Med finale (“Does One Door Close and Another One Open?”), it seemed the tides had turned in favor of Maggie sticking around.
By the Season 9 premiere of Chicago Med, Maggie was back in action at Gaffney, helping patients and assisting her fellow physicians as though Dayton’s tenure had never happened
When was Maggie Lockwood arrested on Chicago Med?
One of the first times Chi-Hards saw Maggie’s true power was in Season 1, Episode 12 (“Guilty”) when she was arrested for obstruction of justice. One of her patients needed immediate medical attention, but the Chicago P.D. wanted to take his blood alcohol level before the doctors rushed him into surgery. She did not allow the police to interfere with her patient’s care and instead put herself on the line.
“Our priority is to treat patients, not to make arrests. As soon as he’s awake and out of surgery, he’s yours,” she told the police. In response, they cuffed her at the hospital and transported her to jail.
In Season 2, Episode 12 (“Mirror Mirror”), the same officer who had arrested Maggie was admitted to Med for urgent treatment after being injured in the field. The cop was rushed into surgery and, though other hospital workers and the police worried that Maggie’s bias would impact her ability to be on the case, Maggie proved that, above all, she always prioritized caring for others and saving their lives.
