Who Killed Colter’s Dad?! Tracker Gets One Step Closer to Finding His *Real* Murderer
With so many questions left unanswered, fans have hope that Tracker Season 2 will provide the details viewers desperately need around Colter’s father’s real killer and other mysteries. Whether or not those questions will be answered in Season 2 is still to be determined, but a recent cast update shows that fans will at least get one step closer to solving the mystery next season.
Who’s in the Tracker Season 2 cast?
No Tracker cast members have announced their exits at the time of writing, so all five main cast members are expected to return for Season 2: Justin Hartley (Colter Shaw); Robin Weigert (Teddi Bruin); Abby McEnany (Velma Bruin); Eric Graise (Bobby Exley); and Fiona Rene (Reenie Greene.)
Three guest stars from Tracker Season 1 are also expected to return for Season 2: Melissa Roxburgh, who plays Dory Shaw, Colter’s younger sister; Jensen Ackles, who plays Russell Shaw, Colter’s older brother; and Sofia Pernas, who plays Billie Matalon, Colter’s rival. (Pernas is also Hartley’s wife.) Hartley confirmed as much in an interview with with Collider in May 2024. “[Sofia] is coming back. Jensen [Ackles] is gonna come back. Melissa [Roxburgh] is gonna come back. There’s another leak for you. They’re all coming back,” he said.
As for the reason for their returns, Russell and Dory’s guest appearances will most likely have to do with the siblings’ father, Ashton Shaw, who died decades earlier. Russell, who has been estranged from Colter for years, made his first appearance in Tracker in the Season 1 penultimate episode, where he denies pushing their father off a cliff and killing him all those years ago. He reasons that Ashton either fell or was pushed by someone else, as Russell had seen someone in the woods the night of Ashton’s death, talking to their mom, Mary Dove Shaw.
Russell reveals that Mary told him to leave and never tell anyone about what he saw because their lives depended on it, so Russell left the family to join the military while Mary convinced Colter that Russell killed Ashton for an unknown reason. The conversation ends there as Russell asks Colter for his help with something else, but fans are sure that the mystery will be explored more in Season 2 with the Shaws’ siblings’ future visits. As for who really killed Ashton, it seems too obvious for it to be Russell, so it could be the mysterious man Russell saw, who viewers will likely learn more about in Season 2.
During his interview with Collider, Hartley teased how Colter’s belief that Russell killed their father affected their relationship. “Colter’s brother killed his father, so that adds a different dynamic. The relationship with Dory is strained for other reasons. It’s not like he suspects her of doing anything wrong like that, but it’s strained for different reasons,” he said.

CBS hasn’t announced Tracker Season 2’s exact premiere date. However, the network confirmed that it will return in the fall of 2024 and keep its 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. time slot on Sunday nights. It will be followed by The Equalizer Season 5 from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mid-season, Tracker will be followed by the new series Watson, a medical drama inspired by Dr. John Watson from Sherlock Holmes, in the 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. time slot on Sunday nights. How many episodes is Tracker Season 2?
CBS hasn’t confirmed the episode count for Tracker Season 2 yet, however, it’s expected that it will have an increased number of episodes from Season 1, which had 13 episodes due to the Writer’s Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes that delayed production on many primetime shows. As for what Tracker Season 2’s episode count could be, we estimate that it will be around 18 episodes, which is the same amount that Equalizer had for its 2nd and 3rd seasons.
