Who’s coming back for Chicago Med Season 10?

Despite the revolving door of cast exits and new arrivals on Chicago Med in recent seasons, original cast members S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, and Marlyne Barrett have remained steady constants. The actors have been on the show since Season 1 and all three are expected to return for the upcoming Season 10, which kicks off this fall.

According to our sister site Deadline, Merkerson, Platt and Barrett recently signed new deals to continue on the NBC medical drama after their contacts ran out at the end of season 9. Merkerson plays Sharon Goodwin, the chief administrator of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, while Platt portrays Dr. Daniel Charles, the Head of Psychiatry. Barrett, for her part, stars as an Emergency Department charge nurse named Maggie Lockwood.

Who's Leaving Chicago Med?

While Merkerson, Platt and Barrett’s presence in Season 10 will ensure some stability on-screen, there was a major behind-the-scenes shakeup ahead of Season 10 that could impact the creative direction of the show. In April 2024, longtime co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider, who have been at the helm since the show first debuted in 2015, announced their departure.

“We were honored to be chosen by Dick Wolf to run Chicago Med and have tremendously enjoyed our association with Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television,” Frolov and Schneider said in a statement. “We love Chicago Med and have devoted all our creative energies to it, but after nine seasons we feel it’s time for us to move on and explore other possibilities. We’ve been privileged to work with a great writing staff, production team and a brilliant cast of actors. We will miss them all.” TV veteran Allen MacDonald will be filling their shoes for Season 10, marking the first time Chicago Med has had one sole showrunner.

Additionally, news of Merkerson, Platt and Barrett’s contract renewals came on the heels of Dominic Rains’ exit. The Iranian-American actor starred as trauma surgeon Dr. Crockett Marcel for season 5-9, and he has yet to speak publicly about his departure. It is also unclear if he will guest star in Season 10 to wrap up Crockett’s storyline.

While fans are sad to see Crockett go, they’re not too surprised. In Season 9, the doctor was shaken up by the death of his patient, a little boy named Colin who needed a liver transplant, as well as the death of Colin’s father, who took his own life. The incident brought up memories of  losing his own daughter to leukemia. In the season finale, Crockett asked Goodwin for a leave of absence to deal with his trauma.

As of this writing, the only cast members who’s fates are unknown are Steven Webber, who plays Dr. Dean Archer; Jessy Schram, who stars as Dr. Hannah Asher, and newcomer Luke Mitchell, who joined Season 9 as Dr. Mitch Ripley.

Chicago Med is available to stream on Peacock.
