Why Angie’s Heartbreaking Turn in ‘Will Trent’ Could Ruin Everything She’s Rebuilt

Will Trent’s Angie is, without a doubt, one of the most tortured characters on TV, and the show refuses to let up on her, resulting in a horrific new direction for her storyline in season 3. The ABC series revolves around Will Trent, a highly skilled GBI agent and someone who has known Angie for a long time. The two Will Trent main characters connected when they were in foster care. Will was abandoned as a baby (but later learned that his mother was murdered after giving birth to him), while Angie’s mother “pimped her out,” beginning when she was five, to fund her addiction.

Over the course of Will Trent’s three seasons, Will and Angie have been through a lot together. Their on-and-off romantic relationship (which began when they were teenagers) has been one of the most unhealthy, unsteady parts of their respective stories. It seems came to a permanent close after Will arrested Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2. However, even though they have recovered their friendship in season 3 and started dating other people, the possibility of Will and Angie reuniting remains alive (especially after Angie’s recent tragedy).

Angie’s Mother Dies In Will Trent Season 3, Episode 15
Angie’s mother, who was incredibly abusive to her growing up, dies at the end of Will Trent season 3, episode 15, resulting in Angie falling off the wagon. Before her death, the hour flashes back to a handful of moments between Angie and her mother. The audience gets to see Angie as a teenager again (played by Savannah Hutson, who is the perfect casting for young Angie). This time, teenage Angie is with her mother, who appears to be a wonderful parent, uplifting her child. The audience knows better than to fall for the facade, though.

The next flashback in “The Most Beautiful, Fierce, Smart, Powerful Creature in the Entire World” occurs when Angie was a rookie cop. Her mother got a DUI, and Angie confronts the older woman while she’s trapped behind bars. Angie wants her mom to admit what she did to her when she was a child, but she claims not to remember. After a few more exchanging words, Angie’s mother lets her temper run wild. The flashback ends with Angie’s mother telling her daughter, “Sometimes I think when God gave me you, he was punishing me,” and Angie claims she was done.

Despite her determination to never see her again, Angie is by her mother’s side in the present while she lies on her deathbed. Angie even frantically dyes her hair blonde because she knows she hates gray hair. It’s evident that Angie desperately seeks love and affirmation from the older woman, despite what she has put her through. She even dreams about her mom waking up and telling her what she wants to hear (and the one thing she doesn’t — that Angie is an addict just like her). Unfortunately, she died before Angie could get any closure in Will Trent season 3, episode 15.

Angie’s Grief Could Lead Her Back To Will (But That’s Wrong)
After her mother dies, Angie heads to a bar and orders a drink in Will Trent season 3, episode 15. Her grief and belief that she and her mother are the same leads her to give in to temptation, breaking her sobriety. Angie’s undoubtedly headed for a downward spiral, which is devastating. However, this latest tragedy could cause the Will Trent season 3 character to fall back into other bad habits, like starting a romantic relationship with Will again.

Given that Will is also at an all-time low after accidentally killing a young teenager, he and Angie could retreat to their old, unhealthy ways by sleeping together to escape their pain. Consequently, the two Will Trent season 3 deaths might cause more damage than initially thought. Of course, Angie is technically still with Seth after episode 15. But since he is sober, Angie falls off the wagon all but dooms their relationship, making it easier for Will and Angie to reunite.

Why Will Trent Season 3 Must Keep Will & Angie Apart
While some might be rooting for Will and Angie to get back together in Will Trent season 3, doing so would damage their dynamic even further than it already is. Neither character is ready for a relationship. Will and Angie have been through unthinkable tragedies, and reuniting will only regress the progress they’ve made in season 3.

Their relationship’s foundation has always been traumatized and hurt, and they can’t get better as individuals if they keep relying on one another to fix each other. Will and Angie must seek help from other sources (like therapy). So, rekindling Will and Angie’s romance in Will Trent season 3 would simply be repetitive, frustrating, and disappointing.
