Over the course of its nine-season run, Chicago Med has lost many original cast members, including Yaya DaCosta as April Sexton, an ED nurse at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. The actress started playing April during Chicago Fire season 3 (as she was sort of dating Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide at the time) before joining the second spinoff in the One Chicago universe. April and Severide were old high school friends who struck a connection. However, their fling wasn’t destined to last, and April was next seen in Chicago Med season 1, episode 1, as one of the main characters.
Dominic Rains is the latest Chicago Med actor to leave the show as his character, Crockett Marcel, will not return in season 10.
DaCosta appeared in 122 episodes of Chicago Med, which covers the first six seasons and her guest appearance in season 8. As any fan knows, April’s presence was significant at Med, as proven by her history on the show. So, it was devastating to learn that DaCosta wouldn’t return for season 7, especially given the various other cast exits that preceded and followed her. Now that April, Will Halstead, Natalie Manning, Sarah Reese, Connor Rhodes, and Ethan Choi are all no longer working at Med, only three original Chicago Med stars remain as the show heads into its tenth season
April Left Chicago Med To Become A Nurse Practitioner
Yaya DaCosta Exited The NBC Series After Season 6
The Chicago Med season 6 finale was Yaya DaCosta’s final episode as a series regular since her character, April, quit and left the hospital. As some may recall, season 6 was affected by COVID-19, and the writers of the acclaimed medical drama decided to weave the pandemic into the show’s storyline. Consequently, April spent a lot of her time treating COVID-19 patients in the ER.
April ultimately decided to leave Gaffney to become a nurse practitioner at the end of Chicago Med season 6.
The traumatizing experience made April rethink her career path, which made her consider expanding her horizons regarding nursing. April ultimately decided to leave Gaffney to become a nurse practitioner at the end of Chicago Med season 6. DaCosta’s character was (unsurprisingly) accepted into a nurse practitioner program, forcing her to say goodbye to her colleagues at Gaffney. Thankfully, that wasn’t the last time fans saw April in the One Chicago TV show.
April Married Ethan Choi in Chicago Med Season 8
April & Ethan Started Dating After Season 2
Before April left Chicago Med, she and Ethan had previously broken up towards the end of season 5. Their relationship had its ups and downs, and the bad outweighed the good, leading to their split. However, April returned during the season 8 premiere after Ethan’s father died. She had finished her nurse practitioner program and was ready to give their relationship another go. Evidently, the time apart made April and Ethan’s bond stronger, and by episode 9, they were married. April and Ethan then decided to open a mobile medical clinic, and neither has appeared in Chicago Med since.
