When *Family Matters* premiered on ABC in 1989 as part of their TGIF lineup, it was a very different show from what it would later become. Initially a spin-off of *Perfect Strangers*, it provided a wholesome look at the Winslow family. ‘Family Matters’ Originated from ‘Perfect Strangers’
The character of Harriette Winslow, portrayed by Jo Marie Payton, originally appeared as a supporting role on *Perfect Strangers*. Harriette worked as an elevator operator at The Chicago Chronicle, where Balki Bartokomous and Larry Appleton (played by Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker) worked. Her role was well-received, leading producers to consider a spin-off featuring her and her husband, Carl Winslow (played by Reginald VelJohnson). The show, *Family Matters*, premiered in fall 1989 as a traditional, family-oriented sitcom. Carl was a Chicago cop, and Harriette worked at The Chicago Chronicle until her job was cut early in the first season. The show centered on the Winslow family, including their two teenage children, Eddie (Darius McCrary) and Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams), and other family members like Carl’s mother, Estelle (Rosetta LeNoire), and Harriette’s sister, Rachel (Telma Hopkins), with her son Richie (Bryton McClure).
*Family Matters* was notable for its all-Black cast, a rarity at the time. Unlike other shows that often portrayed Black characters in stereotypical roles, *Family Matters* aimed to present a Black family that faced universal issues, avoiding heavy discussions on race. The series offered episodes with relatable family dilemmas, concluding with heartwarming resolutions.
The Rise of Steve Urkel
Initially, *Family Matters* was an ensemble show, with Carl and Harriette as the leads. However, in the 12th episode of Season 1, titled “Laura’s First Date,” Steve Urkel made his debut. As the stereotypical nerd with an annoying personality and high-pitched voice, Urkel was intended as a one-off character. However, his humorous antics, distinctive glasses, and catchphrases like “Did I do that?” quickly made him a fan favorite. By Season 2, Urkel was added to the main cast.
The show gradually shifted focus from the Winslow family dynamics to Steve Urkel’s comedic escapades. His constant, uninvited visits, obsession with Laura, and various catchphrases dominated the series. While Urkel was undeniably entertaining, many cast members felt that the show had shifted away from its original concept, making it less about the Winslows and more about Urkel’s antics. This change led to some friction, as what had once been their show seemed to be taken over by a single character.
