In what way was he a “creep”? Back in the mid 70’s to the mid 80’s when Three’s Company was on for eight seasons, comedy was much “looser” and audiences laughed at and related to situational humor. In order for Jack to afford an apartment he agreed to share the apartment with Janet and Chrissy, with all three pooling their rent money. He had to pretend to be gay around Mr. Roper, the superintendent, in order not to get kicked out because Roper didn’t want unmarried people of the opposite sex to live together. Every character but Stanley Roper knew the truth (even his wife Helen), and a great deal of the humor involved having Jack not getting caught dating girls by Mr. Roper.
The character of Jack was actually a kind and thoughtful person who treated his roommates and everyone else well, so I’m not sure in what way he was a creep. Since the series lasted eight seasons, many viewers must have gotten the joke, and were much more liberal (in the true sense of the word) in their appreciation of such humor. Now, any- and everything is passed through the filter of Potential Emotional Trauma, so Three’s Company and other classic comedies of the era would probably never see the light of day. Fortunately viewers can still enjoy “oldies stations” exclusively broadcasting TC and many other classic comedies. (For now…)
