Will and Angie’s relationship on Will Trent has been rocky from the start, but their on-again, off-again romance is likely to stay in the “off” phase forever, as Angie’s statement in season 3 foreshadows the arrival of a new romance. The two main characters of Will Trent have known each other since they were children.
Will and Angie grew up in the foster system together, which bonded them for life but didn’t give them a solid foundation for their relationship. As a result, the GBI agent and detective have broken up and gotten back together multiple times, but their most recent breakup likely won’t last.
Will arrested Angie at the end of Will Trent season 2 after learning she had covered up a murder. Moving into season 3, the two aren’t on good terms. Will has fled to a small town in Tennessee, while Angie is working as a security guard in a gated community after a lenient judge dismisses her case. Angie eventually gets her job back in Will Trent season 3, but that doesn’t magically solve all of her and Will’s problems. They reunite for the first time since her arrest in episode 4, and their encounter cements the end of their romance.
Angie says things will never be the same between her and Will
Will and Angie are forced to work together in Will Trent season 3, episode 4, “Floor Is Lava,” and their interactions are awkward and tense, to put it mildly. They try to keep things friendly, but things eventually fall apart when they run into each other at a restaurant.
Angie yells at Will, claiming that he has “ruined” their lives. Meanwhile, Will stands by his decision and declares that he wants a future with her more than anything. Later, after they solve the case, Angie comes to Will’s office and they have a civilized conversation where she speaks her mind.
Angie admits that things will never be the same between her and Will. They are not lovers, nor are they friends. The two Season 3 characters Will Trent are just colleagues, and so Angie tells Will that she is “freeing” him. They both now have the green light to move on. While in the past, Will and Angie were hesitant to explore relationships with other people because they were both always thinking about the other. However, now, Will and Angie are free of each other.
Angie’s Statement Prepares Fans for Sara’s Inevitable Appearance in Will Trent
While Will’s love interest in Will Trent season 3 is Gina Rodriguez’s Marion Alba, Angie’s words in episode 4 suggest that another love interest in the series will be introduced soon. Sara Linton is a name many Will Trent readers will recognize (mild spoilers from the novels ahead). Along with Angie, Sara is one of Will’s central love interests in Karin Slaughter’s series and a key figure in the protagonist’s storyline.
With Angie firmly closing the door on her romantic relationship (and friendship) with Will in Will Trent season 3, the door is wide open for other love interests to enter the picture. Will’s attitude in season 3 suggests that he knew he and Angie were over, but her statement in episode 4 confirms it to him. So Will could be over Angie. First, he’ll explore his relationship with Marion, as the spark between them was ignited in “Floor Is Lava.” However, if the show’s writers want to bring Sara in, Marion may not be around for long for Will Trent.
However, since the show is quite different from the novels, only time will tell how Will and Sara’s relationship will shape up if/when Will Trent introduces a new character.
In an interview with TVLine a few weeks before Will Trent’s season 2 finale, Ramón Rodríguez discussed the idea of bringing Sara into the series. While the actor didn’t deny that it would happen, he also didn’t confirm that it would happen. Rodríguez said:
“We talked about it. You know, it’s a big deal. We don’t take it lightly. It’s a big character in the books and potentially a big character in the show, so we wanted to be really mindful [about how we did it]. We also have a great cast, so you have to weave things in and out of it in some way. Anytime you’re doing something else and it’s a big thing, you want to be really smart about it.”
Explaining Will and Sara’s Relationship in the Books
Will Trent (ABC series) is different from the books, meaning Will’s relationship with Sara, if she’s ever introduced, could also deviate from the source material. However, in the novels, Sara is a doctor with a traumatic past. She and Will meet when she moves to Atlanta, but they don’t get together right away because he’s still obsessed with Angie. Ultimately,
