Will Danny Be Visited By His Blue Bloods Family on Boston Blue? Donnie Wahlberg Talks Crossovers

Danny Reagan might want to clear a guest room on Boston Blue for his Blue Bloods family.

This fall, Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as the aforementioned NYPD officer in the CBS spinoff (airing Fridays at 10/9c). The offshoot follows Danny as he makes the move to the Boston Police Department, where he is partnered with Detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. But Danny also has a tight-knit clan, headed by Tom Selleck’s patriarch Frank Reagan, back in the Big Apple. So will any of his relatives or his NYPD colleagues pay Danny a visit in his new city?

“New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart,” Wahlberg points out in an interview with Parade, adding that there “a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us.” Even if they can’t physically come to Boston, characters could potentially pop up courtesy of FaceTime and Zoom.

Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me,” Wahlberg continues, “it’s important to Sonequa. She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”

The spinoff will also address what could possibly tear Danny away from the NYPD and his family, which will be “a journey and a process for him,” Wahlberg previews. “He’s with the audience who says, ‘I can’t imagine Danny would move to Boston.’ Well, neither can he. He’s with you. He’s going to have to figure this out because it’s a dramatic life change.”

While the actor can’t reveal what ultimately brings his character to Boston, Wahlberg does share that “as family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum. I think those two things can be true at the same time. He can march to the beat of his own drum, and it can still be about family.”

In addition to Wahlberg and Martin-Green, Boston Blue also stars Gloria Reuben (ER) as Lena’s widowed mother, Mae Silver, who is Boston’s District Attorney; Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Lena’s stepsister, Sarah Silver, a Superintendent in the Boston PD; Marcus Scribner (Black-ish) as rookie cop Jonah, the youngest member of the Silver family; and Ernie Hudson as Lena’s grandfather and Mae’s father, Reverend Peters.
