Will Frank Reagan Visit Boston? Donnie Wahlberg Speaks on Tom Selleck’s Potential Role

Blue Bloods might be over, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of the story for Frank and Danny Reagan.

Two months after the Blue Bloods series finale aired in December, CBS announced that a spinoff series about Donnie Wahlberg’s character Danny had been given a straight-to-series order. Boston Blue will see longtime NYPD officer Danny take a position with Boston PD, where he’s “paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” per the logline.

Little more is known about the spinoff series, which CBS confirmed is a “universe expansion” of Blue Bloods, including whether any familiar faces from New York will appear.

Wahlberg, though, has now teased the possibility of his onscreen dad, Frank Reagan, making an appearance on the spinoff.
When asked by Parade about the chances of Tom Selleck reprising his role as the police commissioner, the 55-year-old actor admitted that “New York and Boston are really close.”

Because the cities are “not that far apart,” Wahlberg seemed to hint that Selleck’s return is likely. “Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me,” he said.

It’s also important to his new costar, The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green, who will play Danny’s partner Lena. He explained, “She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive as well.”

Wahlberg also promised that the spinoff will maintain the throughline that Blue Bloods fans have come to love.
“I’ll just say the journey of developing this show, it’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water, to be in this new world,” he told the outlet of his character’s new life in Boston.

“It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the Blue Bloods legacy is.”

“We’re keeping all of that at the forefront of our thoughts as we build this thing,” the New Kids on the Block singer promised.

Ever since CBS’ confirmed that Blue Bloods would end with season 14, the cast, Selleck included, has been vocal about their desire for a continuation of the universe.
In the months following the network’s November 2023 announcement, Selleck, 80, said he hoped CBS would “come to their senses” and reverse the decision.

“We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” he told CBS News. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place.”

He later reiterated his frustrations as he told TV Insider he believed the show was “always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.”

“I’m kind of frustrated,” he said at the time. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods, but about it still being wildly successful.”

He added, “So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”
