Will Freddie Highmore win Golden Globe after trading in his ‘Bates Motel’ bloody knife for ‘The Good Doctor’ scalpel?

For five years Freddie Highmore played the psychotic Norman Bates on A&E’s “Bates Motel” and received nothing but cold showers from the Golden Globes. But now that Highmore has traded in his bloody knife for a surgeon’s scalpel on ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” he’s been rewarded with his first-ever nomination. Can the popular British star take down all of his American Best TV Drama Actor co-nominees — Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”) and Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) — to win the 2018 Golden Globe?
Highmore’s performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism, actually fits the mold of a previous quirky doctor that was awarded with back-to-back Globes: Hugh Laurie‘s Dr. House (“House”) in 2005 and 2006. As our editor Joyce Eng reminds us in our latest predictions video, “Freddie will be the first actor to win for a broadcast series since Hugh Laurie, who’s also British, who played a doctor in a show by David Shore, who is the EP of ‘The Good Doctor.’ There’s a lot of parallels there.”

Golden Globes voters may elect to anoint Highmore as their pick, however they could also decide to fall in line with the Emmys by going with Brown. Over the past two years Brown has taken home a pair of Emmys for his roles on “This Is Us” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” but so far he hasn’t prevailed at the Globes. In fact, they snubbed him completely for the first season of “This Is Us,” though he did get nominated in the supporting category for “O.J.” at last year’s ceremony.

According to Gold Derby’s 2018 Golden Globes predictions, Highmore comes in second place to win with 8/5 odds, behind Brown with leading odds of 10/9. As for the other three nominees, Bateman has 9/1 odds, Schreiber has 33/1 odds and Odenkirk has 50/1 odds. Do you agree with our racetrack odds?
