Rumors have been swirling online about a Golden Girls 2024 remake, but we’re here to report that the rumors of a new Golden Girls show are, unfortunately, untrue. Dorothy, Rose, Sophia, and Blanche will not be returning to Miami as we thought.
The unfortunate news comes from Dexerto, which debunked the fake news release that initially sparked the rumors.
The Facebook page YODA BBY ABY — which has been become known for covering fake television shows and movies — started the hoax thanks to a poorly photoshopped poster that shows Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Lisa Kudrow playing the iconic Golden Girls.
“This June, get ready to laugh until it hurts with Disney+’s brand new series, ‘The Golden Girls,’ featuring the comedic genius of Tina Fey as Dorothy, Amy Poehler as Sophia, Lisa Kudrow as Rose, and Maya Rudolph as Blanche,” the fake press release states. “Dive into 10 hilarious episodes where Dorothy and her feisty mother Sophia shake up life in Miami by moving in with the flirtatious Blanche and the sweetly naive Rose.”
It continues, “Prepare for a whirlwind of witty banter, unexpected friendships, and the funniest golden era you’ve ever seen – only on Disney+!”
The post obviously sparked some excitement amongst fans, garnering over 79,000 reactions and almost 37,000 comments, not to mention 47,000 shares.
The Golden Girls was a hit on NBC when it premiered in 1985, running for seven season until 1992.
Fans who are looking for more should know there has already been a reboot of Golden Girls: The short-lived 1992 reboot The Golden Palace, in which the ladies bought and began working at a hotel. Bea Arthur did not return for the spinoff, though she made a guest appearance in a double episode.
But series creator Susan Harris has already confirmed that a Golden Girls reboot could never happen without its original cast.
“They’ve wanted to do Golden Girls the Musical and re-do Golden Girls, and we’ve always said no because Golden Girls would not be Golden Girls without that cast,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2017.
She noted that the Golden Girls reboot was not as successful as the original series because Arthur did not return as a regular character.
“Without Dorothy, it didn’t work,” Harris said, adding that The Golden Girls was “what it was and that’s the way it should remain.”
Fans of the show can instead stream all seven seasons of The Golden Girls (the original) on Disney+
