Will Trent has been consistent throughout its three seasons, constantly delivering captivating mysteries, game-changing twists, and episodes that have viewers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. Still, the Academy often overlooks it. The good news is that the Emmys are finally celebrating one aspect of Will Trent (although it’s the wrong one that the ceremony should be focusing on).

Most focus on the more “flashy” Emmy categories, which is likely why Will Trent‘s nomination slipped under the radar. Nevertheless, the ABC TV show is nominated for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming at the 2025 Emmy Awards. While exciting, it’s also a reminder that Ramón Rodríguez has yet to receive a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Will Trent season 3, episode 13 featured a choreographed disco dance number that Will hallucinated after he was drugged. It was completely unexpected but perfect, and it makes sense why the Academy has acknowledged its choreography. However, it doesn’t make sense why the Academy ignored Rodríguez’s impressive work not only in that episode but in season 3 as a whole

Rodríguez’s performance as Will Trent‘s main character deserves praise. From the beginning, the actor has blown the audience away with his ability to convey Will’s underlying vulnerability alongside his outwardly stubborn nature and tough exterior. In spite of his talent, though, Rodríguez has failed to receive an Emmy nomination for the third year in a row.

The Academy Often Overlooks Network TV

Rodríguez not getting a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series is one of network TV’s biggest Emmy snubs in 2025. It’s not surprising, unfortunately. The Academy has turned a blind eye to network TV shows more and more as of late. Streaming is becoming mainstream, while broadcast TV is falling into the background.

Will Trent‘s Rodríguez spoke with NBC News about wanting to become the first Latino actor to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He explained, “It sort of says, ‘Oh wow, this show is critically acclaimed’ [and proves that Latino actors can lead a show with] a compelling story and character.” Sadly, Rodríguez, despite his exceptional talent, can’t make Emmys history in 2025.
