Given how the Will Trent season 3 finale ends, the show has many questions to address in season 4, including the fates of two important characters. The ABC police procedural drama is based on Karin Slaughter’s book series of the same name, following Will Trent, a highly skilled GBI agent with a tragic past. In Will Trent season 3, episode 18 (aka the finale), Will and his team work together to stop a domestic terrorist group from spreading deadly bacteria, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Although they’re successful, the GBI agents and APD detectives don’t close the unscathed case.
According to TVLine, Will Trent season 4 is being held for midseason, meaning it won’t premiere until 2026 on ABC. However, it’ll consist of 18 consecutive episodes.
At the end of Will Trent season 3, the characters stop the bioterrorists, the Founders Front, from making their airborne disease. The group initially taints takeout containers with the bacteria, causing the hospital to go into lockdown. Many people die, but the CDC creates an antitoxin for those infected. Amid the chaos, one important figure in the ABC series gets shot, and another collapses. The episode doesn’t end with all bad news, though, as one character is pregnant and a father/son duo strikes a connection. However, the Will Trent season 3 finale leaves fans wondering what comes next.
Does Amanda Survive?
Amanda Gets Shot At The End Of Will Trent Season 3
Towards the beginning of Will Trent season 3, episode 18, a faction of the Founders Front takes over the GBI. They hold Amanda hostage, and in exchange for her life, the terrorists want the police to release one of their friends from custody. Thankfully, for Amanda, Angie is in the bathroom when the group storms onto the floor. She climbs into the air vents, assesses the situation, alerts Amanda of her presence, and executes a plan to take down the bad guys. While Angie is mostly successful, it still ends with Amanda getting shot.
Angie retrieves Will’s gun from his desk and takes down a few terrorists — she even shoots their leader in the forehead while he has Amanda in a headlock. Amanda retrieves a gun herself, and the two take shelter in Faith’s office. A shootout ensued. One of the gunmen sneaks past Angie and Amanda and is about to take out Angie when the GBI Deputy Director sees him. She steps out of her cover and shoots the man, saving Angie’s life. Unfortunately, this leaves Amanda vulnerable, resulting in another terrorist shooting her in the chest seconds later.
Amanda is rushed to the hospital, where she goes into immediate surgery. Will later learn from Angie that the operation was touch-and-go, and that the next 48 hours are critical for Amanda’s condition. So, the Will Trent season 3 finale ends with Amanda in a coma and Will by her side, demanding that she wake up. Only time will tell if she does, though.
Will Ormewood’s Brain Tumor Kill Him?
Ormewood Collapses In Season 3, Episode 18
Amanda isn’t the only character at risk of dying in the Will Trent season 3 finale — Ormewood also faces death during the episode’s closing moments. A few episodes before, Ormewood learned that he had a brain tumor. Since then, he has been trying to get his affairs in order and preparing for surgery. Unfortunately, it appears that Ormewood and the doctors have waited too long to remove his tumor as he faints in one of episode 18’s last scenes.
Ormewood’s vision starts to get blurry, causing him to collapse. He calls for Faith, and she runs in and calls 9-1-1, speculating that her roommate is having a seizure. Ormewood’s situation might not seem as dire as Amanda’s, but it’s certainly scary. Even if he survives this initial collapse, Ormewood still has a brain tumor to deal with. And we won’t find out what happens to him until Will Trent season 4 premieres in 2026.
If Ormewood Survives, Will He Get Custody Of His Kids?
Ormewood & His Wife Separated During The Season 2 Finale
Assuming that Ormewood survives long enough to make it to the season 4 premiere, he has another matter to contend with — his divorce and custody battle. At the end of Will Trent season 2, Ormewood’s wife, Gina, filed for divorce and full custody of their kids. So, in season 3, he was fighting to keep his son and daughter in his life.
Now, Jake McLaughlin’s character is supportive of his children and a great friend, and he should be granted shared custody of his kids at the very least.
Ormewood has grown so much as a father and a person in Will Trent season 3. His rapid character development has been impressive, as the show began with him being hated by many, including his colleagues. Ormewood was ignorant, rude, stubborn (not in a good way), and unfaithful. Now, Jake McLaughlin’s character is supportive of his children and a great friend, and he should be granted shared custody of his kids at the very least.
What’s Next For Will & His Father, Caleb, Now That They Have Reconnected?
Will Meets His Birth Father In Episode 17
In a surprising turn of events, Will learns who his biological father is in Will Trent season 3, episode 17. He and Faith are instructed to assist local law enforcement in a double homicide, and Will’s dad is the small town’s sheriff, Caleb Roussard. They learn that they are related when a glass door shatters and cuts them, contaminating the crime scene with their blood. The technicians get blood samples from everyone there to differentiate their blood from the victims’, and in the process, the medical examiner, Pete, makes the shocking discovery that Caleb and Will are father and son.
At first, Will wasn’t open to getting to know his father. Thankfully, Will and Caleb have an emotional conversation in the Will Trent season 3 finale, opening the door for their relationship to grow. Will learns that Caleb was deeply in love with his mother, Lucy Morales. However, she disappeared before he could propose. Now, 30-plus years later, Caleb discovers he shares a son with Lucy. Will is more receptive to opening up to Caleb after hearing his backstory, and the two agree to have dinner with Caleb’s wife and children. Hopefully, we’ll see Will and Caleb continue connecting in season 4.
Will Nico Suffer From Any Side Effects After The Biological Attack?
Nico Gets Infected In The Finale
Given that they came in close contact with patient zero in the penultimate episode of Will Trent season 3, it makes sense that Nico gets infected in the finale. The good news is that the doctors administer the antitoxin to Nico before they get worse. However, it’s unclear if Nico will experience any side effects after the bioterrorist attack. Hopefully, they won’t, but anything is possible in the ABC police procedural series.
