Will Trent Season 3 Quietly Drops a Major Character With No Closure in Sight

Only four episodes remain in Will Trent season 3, and one character (Angie’s initial replacement) will be missing from all of them. Throughout the ABC show’s third season, the Will Trent main characters have gone through many obstacles and traumas (none more than Will, of course). They have endured losses, experienced new love, encountered difficult, dangerous cases, and developed surprising friendships. Only time will tell what the remaining episodes of Will Trent season 3 have in store for these characters. But we know one thing for sure — one person won’t be around to see or any face of it.

Following the shocking Will Trent season 2 finale, the characters struggled to return to normal in season 3, especially Will and Angie, whose romantic relationship was fractured beyond repair. As of episode 14, Will and Angie seem on good terms (at least, as friends), though. However, Will’s mental health is arguably at the lowest it has ever been. He accidentally shot and killed a young boy in episode 11, which will continue to affect him for many episodes to come. Unfortunately for Will, one of the people closest to him won’t be around to help him through it.

Will Trent May Have Seen The Last Of Gina Rodriguez’s Marion
According to TVLine, Gina Rodriguez’s Marion Alba (Will’s replacement for Angie) is gone for good in Will Trent season 3. One of Rodriguez’s last appearances (that wasn’t in a dream sequence) came in episode 12, which featured Marion telling Will that she loved him and he being unable to say it back, given his recent trauma. So, Marion decided that she and Will should take a break while he went on his undercover mission. She told him that he knew where to find her when he was ready to talk, but it looks like that won’t happen by the end of season 3.

Will Trent’s co-showrunner Liz Heldens told TVLine that Marion wouldn’t “resurface before season’s end.” Heldens further discussed Marion’s absence and explained, “We don’t have enough runway for everyone.” There is simply not enough room for Rodriguez’s Will Trent season 3 character in its final stretch of episodes, suggesting that fans should be scared about what’s to come for the other characters.

Why It’s Disappointing That Marion Isn’t Returning Anymore In Will Trent Season 3
The main cast of Will Trent has been mostly limited to five characters throughout its three seasons — Will Trent, Angie Polaski, Faith Mitchell, Amanda Wagner, and Michael Ormewood. They have been around since the beginning. However, as time goes on, more characters have been added to the roster, including some who mix up the status quo, for better or worse, and Marion’s introduction was definitely for the better. So, learning that Marion won’t return for the rest of Will Trent season 3 is disappointing, to say the least.

Marion’s extended absence is also unfortunate because her Will Trent season 3 story doesn’t feel over. Her breakup with Will was quite sudden. Consequently, Will and Marion’s relationship never received true closure, which they deserve after the ABC police procedural series spent a lot of time in season 3’s first half developing their romance. Marion leaving multiple episodes before the Will Trent season 3 finale is a missed opportunity. Will and Marion are good together; Their timing just wasn’t right, and they need to have a proper conversation about that before anyone (including the audience) can move on.

Marion Still Needs To Return In Will Trent Season 4
The last time the viewers see Marion cannot be through a dream sequence, with Will asking her to wait for him until his mental health is stable (in two years or so). As mentioned above, Marion’s arc doesn’t feel complete, nor does Will and Marion’s relationship. So, since she won’t return before season 3 ended, Rodriguez had to reprise her role in Will Trent season 4. The good news is that Heldens left the door open for her return. The co-showrunner told TVLine, “I think that Gina Rodriguez is wonderful… I wouldn’t rule out her coming back in season 4 at all.”

Even though there is no official confirmation regarding Marion’s return in season 4, it would make sense for her to appear. Based on his dream sequence, Will still has feelings for and wants to be with Marion. Perhaps Marion isn’t Will’s endgame. However, that doesn’t mean the show can throw their romance away and pretend it never happened. As a result, Rodriguez has to reprise her role as Marion in Will Trent season 4, even if it’s only for one episode, to give her character and relationship with Will closure.
