Will Trent Season 4 Has the Perfect Chance to Introduce His Endgame — But With a Wild Twist

Karin Slaughter’s books already differ significantly from ABC’s Will Trent, but the series should make just one more alteration for the sake of its characters. Wilbur is once again single before the events of the Will Trent season 3 finale, leaving the romance side of his character arc wide open to involve multiple existing characters from the Will Trent cast.

In the books, Will’s relationship history looks a lot different than on the TV show. Rather than the on-and-off romance portrayed by ABC, Will and Angie split up relatively quickly in the books before Will establishes a permanent relationship with Sara Linton. But if Sara appears in Will Trent season 4, things shouldn’t play out in the exact same way.

Will Needs To Be Single For A While After Will Trent Season 3

He Said It Himself That He Needs About Two Years

There have already been theories and rumors about the possibility of Sara Linton’s appearance in Will Trent season 4. But if the show decides to go that route, Will shouldn’t actually get into a romantic entanglement with Sara until he’s over his trauma from season 3. It was his guilt and despair that pushed Marion away in the first place.

Marion already presents a problem with Will and Sara getting together in the series, as Will’s season 3 drug trip suggested he’s holding out to get back with Marion again. He specifically says to Marion during his hallucination that he needs two years to work on his mental health before he’ll be ready to date, but Sara has another option.

Sara Linton Is Ormewood’s Perfect Love Interest In Will Trent Season 4

And They Already Have A Reason To Meet Each Other

There are fans who believe Will Trent shouldn’t introduce Sara Linton, one of the reasons being that Will and Marion are already a perfect match once Will is in the right mental space. However, Sara Linton would actually make a better romantic pairing with Michael Ormewood. At the very least, he’s not currently tied down by any other serious relationship.

In Karin Slaughter’s Grant County books, Sara was a doctor before she was a medical examiner. Introducing her at this stage in her life would set up the possibility that Will Trent could feature Sara’s introduction as one of the doctors in the hospital while Ormewood’s having his brain tumor treated. Professional ethics aside, their relationship could develop from there.

Ormewood has become a better father (and better man overall) since his initial introduction in Will Trent, and it’s easier now to see him in a stable and healthy relationship. Moreover, Sara may see benefits to dating a man with kids after past medical issues forced her into getting a hysterectomy. But their relationship shouldn’t change the books too much.

How ABC’s Will Trent Can Set Up Sara And Ormewood Without Disregarding The Books

Karin Slaughter fans have largely accepted the differences between Will Trent and the books, but Sara could be another issue since she originated from another book series that hasn’t been adapted. However, Will Trent can still keep most of Sara’s backstory from the books and potentially even adapt some of her plotlines. Some details may just have to be reinterpreted.

If Will Trent includes her becoming a medical examiner, her professional relationship with Will could remain the same. Sara and Will could even pursue romance for a bit until Marion comes back, having them bond over their trauma if the series retains her last husband’s fate. Her bond with Michael would simply develop after she and Trent don’t work out.

Even if ABC does substantially alter Sara’s book storyline to better match the tone and story of the series, book fans seem to have accepted that the two mediums have very different tones. Will Trent making a few changes to Sara’s character just further solidifies that the series is its own thing, making her relationship with Ormewood easier to justify.
