Will Trent’s Best-Kept Secret? This Underrated Character Deserves the Spotlight in Season 4

Will Trent has always consisted mostly of five main characters — Will, Angie, Faith, Amanda, and Ormewood — but in season 4, the show should consider adding one more name to that list. The ABC police procedural series has more than enough love to spread around. So, Will Trent should fully lean into its ensemble cast by giving an underrated character a bigger role.

Following the ending of Will Trent season 3, the show might lose a couple of characters. Amanda got shot in the finale, leaving her in a coma, while Ormewood collapsed from a seizure. Both of their lives are in jeopardy heading into Will Trent season 4. So, when the time comes, hopefully, one person will step up to the plate.

Nico Was Introduced In Will Trent Season 1, Episode 2

Cora Lu Tran Plays Nico

Aside from Will Trent‘s five main characters (and Betty, of course), someone else has been there from almost the very start — Nico. Angie and Ormewood met Nico, played by Cora Lu Tran, in season 1, episode 2. They ran into Nico (who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns) during an investigation, and they helped the two detectives solve their case.

Angie takes Nico under her wing by introducing them to Will and hiring them to look after Betty while he is at work. From that day forward, Nico has been a constant in Will’s life. Sure, Angie was the first person to discover Nico. However, they have grown very close to Will, and the two have developed a strong bond in the cop show.

Nico Is One Of The Most Important People In Will’s Life

They Live In Will’s House

As mentioned above, Nico is very important to Will in Will Trent. He lets them stay at his house and is one of the only people he trusts to take care of Betty. Nevertheless, they have always been a recurring character in the ABC crime drama, but they deserve to have much more focus on them. Hopefully, that will change soon.

The Will Trent season 3 premiere proved how strong Will and Nico’s bond is when Will returned to Atlanta. He had run away to a small town in Tennessee without telling anyone where he was going after he had arrested Angie (forever ruining the possibility that they would end up together). Will even took Betty with him.

While he was away, Nico had moved into the main house, and when they saw Will for the first time in six months, they were furious. First of all, Nico loves Betty so much. So, they were upset that Will had taken the chihuahua from her. However, Nico was upset because of how worried they had been about Will.

Essentially, Will Trent season 3, episode 1 showcased that Nico is one of the most important people in Will’s life. Since he is the protagonist of the ABC TV series, it would make sense for Nico to have a bigger role in it. They also have a close friendship with Angie (another important person in Will’s life). It’s about time Nico gets more screen time.

Will Trent Should Promote Cora Lu Tran To Series Regular

Tran Needs More Screen Time

Even though Nico isn’t a law enforcement officer, they can still have a significant presence in Will Trent season 4. The show isn’t all about crime, after all. The writers could give Nico their own storyline, or Tran’s character could continue helping Ormewood while he struggles with his brain tumor (if he survives the Will Trent season 3 finale, that is).

In Will Trent season 4, the series can do right by Tran’s character and bring them into the spotlight.

Will Trent season 4 could also dive deeper into Nico’s backstory and how they ended up where they are today. We don’t know much about their past, and it would be quite interesting to learn more. Whatever the case, the easiest way for Will Trent to guarantee that Nico has more screen time is to promote Tran to a series regular.

Gina Rodriguez (who played Marion Alba) was even granted that title in Will Trent season 3, despite her not even appearing in a majority of the episodes. So, the least the producers could do is to make Tran a part of the main cast in the upcoming season. It’s well past time for them to do so.

Nico is one of the original characters in Will Trent, but it’s easy to forget that they have been around for so long. When Nico appears, it’s usually to support a different character’s story or even an investigation (like in the season 3 finale). In Will Trent season 4, the series can do right by Tran’s character and bring them into the spotlight.
