Y: Marshals Trailer Reveals Kayce’s Yellowstone Spinoff

Luke Grimes is saddling back up as the fan-favorite Dutton son, Kayce, in the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff series, Y: Marshals. Since the launch of the neo-Western drama, Taylor Sheridan has seen a lot of success expanding the franchise with its two prequel spinoffs, 1883 and 1923.

Y: Marshals, penned by SEAL Team alum Spencer Hudnut, serves as a sequel to the mainline series. It focuses on Grimes’ Kayce Dutton in the wake of the Yellowstone series finale, in which he and his sister, Beth, struck a deal with Thomas Rainwater to sell the ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation, barring a small piece of land for the former to live on with his family.

While the prior show ended with him intending to run his land as a new ranch, Y: Marshals will see Kayce joining the titular law enforcement group in an effort to maintain order in Montana. The cast will be a mix of new and returning faces, including Rainwater’s Gil Birmingham, Moses Brings Plenty’s Mo, Brecken Merrill’s Tate Dutton and Logan Marshall-Green, among others.

As first released by Entertainment Weekly, the Y: Marshals teaser trailer sees Grimes’ Kayce back in action, situated atop a horse alongside other U.S. Marshals watching over a moving train. The footage for the 2026 Yellowstone spinoff then features a voiceover from the Dutton son, in which he expresses his desire to look for a new beginning.

What This Teaser Trailer Means For Y: Marshals

Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton in Yellowstone

Albeit a very brief snippet of what’s to come from the show, the Y: Marshals teaser trailer does offer a few insights as to what to expect. For starters, Luke seems to be in a very similar place to where he was in the early seasons of Yellowstone, questioning his life path and trying to determine what he wants his legacy to be apart from the Dutton Ranch.

As to why he decides to abandon his ranch plans and join the Marshals, there are a few possible reasons. One of the more likely is that he still finds himself haunted by his family’s drama, and the death of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III, that he feels he can’t spend too much time there.

The other possible reason is that, even with Broken Rock being on the neighboring land, the death of John Dutton and the dissolution of the ranch could have given rise to various criminal elements. While he may not have been the ultimate stopping point for them, there’s no denying Dutton’s influence frequently created fear amongst Montana locals for his reputation.

One of the other major takeaways from the Y: Marshals teaser trailer is that the show doesn’t appear to be skimping on its action. Unlike its fellow Yellowstone spinoffs, this is the first show produced specifically for network TV on CBS. Though this could have led to a reduced budget, the glimpse of Kayce racing after a car on horseback carries the same feel as the original show.

Our Take On The Y: Marshals Teaser Trailer

As much as I would’ve been content with him staying on the ranch and spending more time with Monica and Tate, I won’t deny that the Y: Marshals trailer is exciting for Kayce to be back in action.

His vision quest in the original Yellowstone felt like it only scratched the surface of some of his lingering trauma from his military days, and therefore the Marshals could bring some of that back to explore in a meaningful way, given the spinoff will have more real estate for that.
