Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has confirmed his new movie project, the familiarly-named Empire of the Summer Moon.
Following on from Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Sheridan and his company Bosque Ranch have snapped up the rights to novel Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, reports Deadline.
As that subtitle explains, the novel also focuses on a Native American tribe, specifically a battle between the Comanche tribe, lead by chief Quanah, and white settlers over the American West.
The tribe was known for having its members be incredibly skilled in horse-riding and using lances and bows, due to training from a young age, and for fighting off the Spanish and French.
Quanah, who is historically considered the tribe’s greatest chief, is the child of a woman who was kidnapped by the tribe when she was nine years old, and eventually decided that she didn’t want to leave when given the choice.
The writer of the book, SC Gwynne, issued a statement that reads: “I can’t think of anyone better qualified to bring Empire of the Summer Moon to the screen than Taylor Sheridan. He has a deep and nuanced understanding of both the myth and reality of the Old West. I am thrilled that he is undertaking this project.”
In 2021, Sheridan bought the 6666 Ranch, also known as the Four Sixes Ranch, which has very deep ties to Quanah.
