Yellowstone is sadly coming to an end following season 5, but recent reports regarding one of the television show’s upcoming spinoffs suggest it will perfectly serve as Yellowstone season 6’s replacement. The Paramount Network neo-Western series, created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, premiered in June 2018 and slowly but surely became one of the most talked-about dramas on television. However, following the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding Kevin Costner’s exit from Yellowstone in 2023, the show is set to conclude after the season 5 finale (but the franchise will continue with its countless number of spinoffs).
Of course, one would immediately look to Yellowstone’s upcoming spinoffs to find the Paramount Network series’ placeholder once it officially ends. 1923 will return for season 2 at an unspecified date, while Sheridan has three other supplemental shows in the works — 1944, a prequel set in 1944; 6666, a spinoff set in the present day on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas; and 2024, a sequel series rumored to be headlined by Matthew McConaughey. Ultimately, though, 2024 (a title that might be changed as production progresses) will likely be the best replacement for Yellowstone season 6.
Yellowstone Stars Returning For The New Spinoff Is Good News After Season 5’s Struggles
According to the What I’m Hearing newsletter at Puck, three Yellowstone cast members are finalizing deals to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel series 2024 — Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, and Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. Hauser, Reilly, and Grimes have been among the most important series regulars in the neo-Western drama since its first season, so, the report of them joining the spinoff is a good sign for the Yellowstone franchise following the struggles season 5 has endured to be produced and released.
The Yellowstone universe’s future is seemingly bright due to Hauser, Reilly, and Grimes reportedly continuing their roles following the series finale.
Paramount has yet to confirm this report, but Rip, Beth, and Kayce’s returns in the Yellowstone spinoff could change the tides for the franchise after Costner’s controversial departure. Unfortunately, Matthew McConaughey’s involvement in the future show is still up in the air, as some claims state the actor will depend his decision on the spinoff’s creative direction. Nevertheless, the Yellowstone universe’s future is seemingly bright due to Hauser, Reilly, and Grimes reportedly continuing their roles following the series finale.
Will Yellowstone’s New Show Effectively Just Be Season 6?
Even though the series is set to end with season 5, the news surrounding the important Yellowstone characters’ returns in 2024 suggests that the show will continue (just under a different name). The upcoming sequel series appears to be, for all intents and purposes, season 6, but without the Yellowstone name and a new lead character (if Matthew McConaughey signs on to star in the spinoff). Only time will tell how different or similar 2024 is to Yellowstone, but the good news is that some of the original show’s characters’ stories won’t end in season 5.
What To Expect From Beth, Rip & Kayce In The Yellowstone Spinoff
Given that Yellowstone season 5, part 2 hasn’t even been released yet (along with the fact that Paramount hasn’t confirmed Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes’ involvement), it’s difficult to predict what Taylor Sheridan has in mind for Rip, Beth, and Kaycee in the upcoming spinoff. Ultimately, what happens to Beth and Rip in Yellowstone season 5 is key to its story, so, their ending will undoubtedly alter 2024’s plot. The couple is considered the heart of the show, and how Beth’s rivalry with her brother Jamie ends should influence her (and Rip’s) story in the spinoff.
Beth may inherit the Yellowstone ranch during the series finale of the neo-Western drama, leading one to believe that 2024 is truly just Yellowstone season 6 as its plot would (still) include the ranch. Ultimately, the most likely possibility for Beth and Rip’s stories in the spinoff would revolve around them carrying on Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III’s legacy. On the other hand, Kayce and his wife Monica might be the ones to take over the Yellowstone ranch, given that they started looking after it when John was elected governor.
