Thanks to the power of technology, Young Sheldon and Old Sheldon can coexist.
In anticipation of the hit sitcom coming to an end — with a finale featuring a cameo appearance from a certain someone — Iain Armitage teamed up with fellow Sheldon Cooper actor, Jim Parsons, for a sweet social media post.
“So apparently, there’s a new filter that shows you what you look like when you grow up,” Armitage says in the video, before tapping the screen to activate the so-called filter. His finger briefly blocks the camera, then moves to reveal Parsons sporting a similar outfit.
“Hmmm I’m not sure about this. Oh, it changes your voice too,” jokes Parsons-as-Armitage. “I don’t like it.”
The gag comes a week after Young Sheldon wrapped production on its seventh and final season.
The Big Bang Theory prequel follows the early life of titular child prodigy Sheldon Cooper, with Armitage playing the character originated by Parsons, who has remained involved as a producer and the show’s narrator. To mark the end of the series, Parsons will appear as more than just a voice in the finale.
Armitage has already teased a “bittersweet” end to the season, saying in a recent interview, “It very much comes full-circle, and I think we are trying to do our best to satisfy both fans of our show and Big Bang.”
Parsons won’t be the only familiar face featured in the finale: Mayim Bialik will also return to the Big Bang Theory Universe as Sheldon’s future wife, Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler. Of reprising their roles together, Parsons told Today that the experience was “very weird” but “beautiful.”
He explained, “It was really sweet. It felt like the nicest little coda to the whole experience, and I was very grateful that they asked us to do it.”
Following the end of the prequel series, The Big Bang Theory universe is set to expand yet again via a Young Sheldon spinoff centering Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and his wife, Mandy (Emily Osment), as they raise their family in Texas.
Young Sheldon airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, with the finale slated to air May 16.
