Over its first few seasons, Young Sheldon was firmly in the comedy genre. Sheldon Cooper spent his days trying to navigate a world where everyone was intellectually inferior. Because of that, he moved through school with remarkable speed and spent most of his days with people much older than him. Of course, that made for some pretty funny moments, as the boy genius had to deal with things out of his purview.
However, none of that prepared him for the adult problems that started to hit the Cooper family in the back half of Season 5. George lost his job as the high school’s football coach, and even if it was a justified decision (George wasn’t a great coach), it was financially hard for the Coopers. On top of that, Georgie (who’s getting closer to his TBBT counterpart) went and got Mandy pregnant, which turned the whole family into pariahs at church. All of that and more has shown how Young Sheldon is veering from comedy into tragedy.
Young Sheldon Is Building Up George
When Season 6 started, things looked pretty bleak for the Cooper family. Georgie was going to be a father, and Mandy wanted nothing to do with him. More importantly, he and Meemaw were in jail at the Mexican border and needed to be bailed out. Shortly after that, Mary stopped attending church. Everything was headed downhill, but interestingly enough, the past few episodes have shown that there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
In Episode 5, “A Resident Advisor and the Word ‘Sketchy,'” Mary and George rekindled their romance. They had been emotionally and physically distant for a while, and most fans thought that George’s affair with Brenda was about to materialize. Yet, after Episode 5, George not being loyal to Mary looked less likely in the immediate future. Then, in Episode 6, “An Ugly Car, an Affair and Some Kickass Football,” George got his job back. The current coach’s wife left him, and that left him in shambles. So, the principal asked George to step back into a full-time role after he won a big game as a fill-in coach.
