Young Sheldon’s New Spinoff Makes A 16-Year The Big Bang Theory Trend Worse

George and Mandy’s in-development Young Sheldon spinoff will worsen a disappointing trend that The Big Bang Theory started 16 years ago.
The new Young Sheldon spinoff that centers on Georgie and Mandy will make a 16-year The Big Bang Theory trend worse. Young Sheldon season 7 was supposed to wrap up the Coopers’ story after Sheldon’s story in Texas ends, and he moves to Pasadena, California to start his post-graduate studies at Caltech. However, ahead of its return for its final year, a fresh spinoff has been announced, which will follow Georgie and Mandy as they navigate marriage and parenting. The untitled project guarantees that The Big Bang Theory universe continues on the network for the foreseeable future.
Plot specifics about the next The Big Bang Theory spinoff remain uncertain, and understandably so, considering that it won’t premiere until the 2024-2025 TV season. Since it comes from the main creatives of Young Sheldon, they’re mostly focused on wrapping up Young Sheldon season 7 first, before fully moving to the new series. In any case, the premise for Mandy and Georgie’s show is quite clear, with its parent project expected to further set it up. While it’s quite separated from The Big Bang Theory, the upcoming offshoot impacts a negative trend that the nerd-centric sitcom started in 2008, towards the end of its first season.

The Big Bang Theory & Young Sheldon Underused Missy
In The Big Bang Theory season 1, episode 15, “The Porkchop Indeterminacy,” Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy, was finally introduced to the series, making her the second member of the Cooper family to appear in the show. Unlike Sheldon, Missy was self-aware and sociable — something that surprised the Pasadena gang. It wouldn’t be another decade before she returned to The Big Bang Theory for Sheldon and Amy’s wedding, but despite only visiting Pasadena twice, she made a big enough impression, paving the way for a bigger role in Young Sheldon.
Unfortunately, the prequel spinoff failed to take advantage of The Big Bang Theory setting up an interesting character. Granted that she did have some cool moments and good episodes, but considering her potential, she remains underutilized. Even the CBS family comedy seems to admit that when they crafted her rebellious storyline in season 6. Young Sheldon season 7 appears to finally be fixing Missy, which is a welcome development. That being said, it’s unlikely that they can make up for it properly given the limited time that the show has left.
Georgie’s Young Sheldon Spinoff Leaves Missy Out
No official casting has been announced for the Mandy and Georgie Young Sheldon spinoff, but the initial reports claim that it will focus on them navigating parenthood. As exciting as this is, it once again sidelines Missy, who could have easily headlined the show with Georgie, making it more about Sheldon’s siblings. In any case, that would still ensure that Mandy and Baby Cece are focal points of its narrative because of their ties to Mary and George’s eldest. Even if Missy ends up appearing in the series, she will likely end up as a supporting character again — a shame given the narrative opportunities that she has.
