Young Sheldon’s Spinoff Is Focusing On The Wrong Character

Young Sheldon’s Spinoff Is Focusing On The Wrong Character

Young Sheldon’s spinoff will focus on Georgie and Mandy, but The Big Bang Theory’s canon proves the show should center on another major character.
While Young Sheldon’s spinoff will focus on a significant member of the Cooper clan, the show would have answered more mysteries left behind by The Big Bang Theory if if were to focus on a different character. Young Sheldon has proven incredibly popular with viewers, so it is no surprise that The Big Bang Theory prequel spawned a spinoff of its own. Young Sheldon’s spinoff will reportedly begin after the show’s final season ends, with producers and writers from both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon’ working on this follow-up. Steven Molaro, Chuck Lorre, and Steve Holland are expected to write the show’s pilot as well as produce the series.
While Young Sheldon season 7 has only 14 episodes, the show won’t need to wrap up all its existing storylines in that time. Reportedly, the spinoff will focus on Georgie and Mandy’s married life, meaning their plot can be concluded in the follow-up show. However, before the series has even begun, Young Sheldon’s spinoff has already made the mistake of focusing on the wrong character. It’s Missy, rather than Georgie, who needs a series of her own.

Young Sheldon’s Spinoff Should Have Followed Missy

While Young Sheldon’s season 6 ending did feature Mandy proposing to Georgie, the same outing also proved that Missy deserves a spinoff series more than her brother. Missy’s rebellious streak makes her a better foil to the rule-abiding Sheldon than Georgie, while Sheldon and Missy’s shared age makes their radically different life paths even more intriguing. Missy’s character arc in season 6 was more engaging than Georgie’s storyline with Mandy since Missy’s struggles with authority were less repetitive than Mandy and Georgie’s relationship. Ever since Mandy was first introduced, George had been trying to woo her by proving he was more mature than he seemed.

As such, it was no shock when she finally relented and proposed to him in the finale. In contrast, Missy’s attempts to escape the boredom, restriction, and constant conflict of the Cooper household saw her attend a frat party, cause chaos with a new friend, and even steal her father’s truck to go on a joyride. While it is good that Georgie’s Young Sheldon season 7 story won’t be too bleak since the series no longer has to explain his breakup with Mandy, it is nevertheless a shame that Missy didn’t receive a spinoff instead. Her unpredictable season 6 arc proves she is more compelling than the other Cooper siblings.
Young Sheldon’s Georgie and Mandy Spinoff Is Predictable
Georgie’s TBBT appearances already revealed how his marriage ends
Georgie and Mandy’s upcoming Young Sheldon spinoff will reportedly focus on their lives as newlyweds. However, viewers already know that they will end up divorced in years to come thanks to The Big Bang Theory. In season 11, episode 23, “The Sibling Realignment,” there is a reference to Georgie’s two ex-wives. This means that Mandy and Georgie’s relationship is already doomed before their show has begun, which could limit the potential of their spinoff. In contrast, after Young Sheldon wasted Missy for years, a spinoff focused on her teens and early adulthood could have filled in the blanks between the prequel and her appearances in The Big Bang Theory.

In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon’s twin sister initially seemed like a happy, stable person. However, subsequent episodes saw her life unravel. In season 7, episode 11, “The Cooper Extraction,” Sheldon was called upon to assist with her baby’s birth since her husband was recovering from a motorcycle accident while, in season 11, episode 24, “The Bow Tie Asymmetry,” she revealed she was separated from her husband but pregnant with his child. This character arc proved that Missy’s later life is defined by misfortune, meaning a spinoff focused on her preceding years could have shown that Sheldon’s sister wasn’t always so unlucky after their youth.

Missy’s Spinoff Could Have Solved TBBT’s Biggest Canon Plot Hole
A spinoff starring Missy could also have featured Young Sheldon’s Paige
One of the biggest plot holes Young Sheldon season 7 must address is why McKenna Grace’s Paige was never mentioned in The Big Bang Theory. However, a spinoff starring Missy could have easily fixed this issue. Since Missy and Paige are friends, Missy’s spinoff would have facilitated the return of Paige. This could have allowed the series to explain why Paige is never mentioned in the earlier series, as she might have betrayed Sheldon badly or simply grown apart from her old friend.

In contrast, it would be almost impossible for Young Sheldon’s Georgie and Mandy spinoff to address Paige’s future. After all, Georgie has barely interacted with Paige. As such, the spinoff would have a hard time addressing the question of why Sheldon never mentioned Paige since she has no reason to appear in the series in the first place. As such, Young Sheldon should have spawned a Missy-centric spinoff to give Missy a better character arc, explain Paige’s absence from The Big Bang Theory, and avoid the inevitable predictability of Georgie and Mandy’s eventual breakup.
