The showrunner of Dutton Ranch will not be returning after season 1, PEOPLE confirms.
Chad Feehan created and served as an executive producer alongside Taylor Sheridan on the Yellowstone spinoff, which is set to make its debut on Friday, May 15, however, he won’t be taking part in the series should it be renewed for a second season.
This also marks the second time Sheridan and Feehan have worked together. Feehan previously created the 2023 Paramount+ Western Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which Sheridan executive-produced. The single season featured Emmy nominee David Oyelowo in the titular role. Dennis Quaid and Donald Sutherland also starred.
Dutton Ranch follows the conclusion of its flagship Western drama, Yellowstone, which ended its five-season run in December 2024. The spinoff follows two of its main characters, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), as they start a life together in Texas.

“As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together — far from the ghosts of Yellowstone — they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire,” the official logline reads. “In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”
In addition to Reilly and Hauser, Finn Little is back as Carter, who was first introduced in Yellowstone season 4. Annette Bening will also appear in the series as Beulah Jackson, a “powerful, cunning and charming head of a major ranch in Texas.”
Other members of the cast include Ed Harris, Jai Courtney, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn Lind, Juan Pablo Raba and J.R. Villarreal.
In March, Yellowstone producer David Glasser opened up about Dutton Ranch, explaining that it is “a way to explore the characters, but also mature the characters.”
“I think that’s the nice thing. We all want to be with them on the ride, but we also want to see them grow,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “These shows always, for us, are a lot of dead bodies, a lot of people getting shot, a lot of crazy stuff happening, and just when you think we can’t turn it up a notch, we do.”

Dutton Ranch is the latest extension of a number of Yellowstone prequels, spinoffs and sequels, including 1883, 1923, 1944, 6666 and Marshals, which recently began airing on CBS and stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.
“Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with 5 million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions — and we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, in November 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Dutton Ranch premieres on Paramount+ May 15 with two episodes.
