The most recent season of Disney+’s popular crime drama concluded in the most dramatic of fashions. Not only were several mysteries left unresolved, but the fate of one character was also left uncertain, leaving numerous fans deeply concerned.

Early in the second season, the new police captain, Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey, was introduced and swiftly established as a potential love interest for Morgan. He was also occasionally portrayed as a partial antagonist, as he butted heads with Morgan and the rest of the team over the manner in which they conducted their investigations, reports the Mirror.

However, more often than not, even when asserting his authority, he demonstrated that he was on their side and eventually began actively contributing to the effort to uncover the truth about what really happened to Morgan’s ex-husband, Roman.

In the season finale, towards the end of the episode, Wagner rings Morgan to inform her he has a meeting with someone with a possible FBI link, and the details are sent to him via text from his dad. Morgan agrees to meet him there, but upon her arrival, she discovers Nick slumped on a bench, severely injured and bleeding out, possibly from a gunshot wound to the back. The scene cuts to black before viewers can discover whether Nick will survive his wounds. Fans are anxious that this could signal Nick’s death off-screen before the confirmed third season arrives.

Olson has since acknowledged that Wagner’s character played a significant part throughout the season. Speaking to Variety, she said: “We wanted to have a little bit of a mystery, and we also wanted to stump Morgan. It was very important to me that she’s not always right about everything. I like that she’s a very intelligent person, and she’s also human and doesn’t know whether to trust this man. Who is he? Does he need something from her? Is he actually interested in her? So that was fun to explore and play with.”

By the close of season 2, Morgan has a raw emotional reaction to Wagner’s life being in danger. Olson told People magazine: “Now more than ever, now that somebody that she deeply cares about got really hurt or is potentially dead, everything changed.”

She further added: “I mean, I think she just wants to put the lid back on, but it’s too late. That’s just always so much more fun to watch when things are completely off the rails, and it’s certainly more fun to play.”

As for Nick Wagner’s fate, the actor was only contracted to portray the role for one season as a regular. While a guest appearance remains a possibility, fans are concerned this may indicate his character will be killed off in the season three opener. Olson has revealed that no decisions have been made as yet. She said: “It’s definitely being discussed (what happens next). Listen, this is a really big job. This is a show with multiple tones, and that’s not easy to do. I’m so particular about every single aspect of these scripts and these storylines.

“There is a lot on the table. There are so many places that we can go. We’re going to have to have some answers there pretty quickly.”

High Potential is also searching for a new showrunner ahead of the next series, who will have considerable influence over the direction the show takes.

Should Howey reprise his role as Nick, his packed schedule could prove something of a hurdle. He is currently filming a recurring part in season 5 of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, while he is also due to feature in the second season of Ransom Canyon and Prime Video’s Off Campus.
