Chicago Med season 11 is quickly nearing its finish line, and the show is building towards the birth of Hannah and Dean’s daughter.
Episode 17 saw Lenox officially select Hannah’s temporary replacement with the return of Dr. Lovell, a choice that did not sit well with Hannah. Through the episode, we saw Hannah butting heads with Lovell over patient care and communication, with Hannah going as far as telling Lenox she strongly opposed the decision.
It proved to be a moot point for Hannah as Lenox made it clear that she is not going to change her mind, which hints we’ll see a lot more of Lovell as the season comes to a close and Hannah inches closer to her due date. The expectation is that Hannah will give birth before the season finale.
With her due date inching closer, we expect that Hannah’s fears about dying while giving birth like her mother will again bubble to the surface. It’s a very real fear for Hannah to have, and it seems Chicago Med showrunner Allen MacDonald is determined to keep fans’ stress levels on the high side when it comes to the fate of Hannah and her baby.
MacDonald has been casting doubts over whether there could be some complications when Hannah delivers the baby from the beginning of the season. Back in September, MacDonald began stirring the pot and creating concern among fans when he told TVLine the pregnancy storyline was one “we’re gonna track through most of the season; sometimes pregnancy news changes… You’ll notice I didn’t say they’re going to have the baby.”
Now, he’s doubling down on that once again when declining to answer a question from a reader regarding whether the show might explore Hannah struggling with postpartum depression in Matt’s Inside Line. The reason for doing so was that replying to the comment would assume the upcoming birth will go smoothly.
This seems to suggest that something could happen when it comes time for Hannah to give birth, which makes us worried there could be complications. Hopefully, that will not be the case, but Chicago Med has never been afraid of bold storytelling and creative risks, so there is no telling what could happen when Hannah finally goes into labor and must deliver her baby.
Given the fear Hannah has in dying during childbirth, we truly hope that does not come to fruition, as we cannot imagine the show without Hannah. She’s one of the best characters the show has, and we’d hate the idea of her story ending with history repeating. We’d much rather see how Hannah and Dean navigate co-parenting than see Dean having to raise their baby alone following Hannah’s death.
Let’s hope MacDonald is simply trying to throw fans off the scent of what is planned and that Hannah will deliver a healthy baby and not die during childbirth like her mother did.
